The Free World: A Reading and Starred Reviews

The Free World: A Reading and Starred Reviews

If you see me out at a professional event, I'll be drinking white wine, or a gin and tonic, or maybe a really pale beer. Maybe. I do this for both our sakes because I'm one of those girls that spills. But last night I really should have forsaken this protective stance and ordered one of the never-clear, but ever-intriguing infused vodkas at the Russian Samovar. Cranberry, pepper, or even garlic vodka would have been the perfect companion for an evening of Soviet Union-themed literature at the FSG Reading series featuring David Bezmozgis reading from his debut novel, THE FREE WORLD. Scheduled for release in April, THE FREE WORLD is already delighting reviewers.

Greetings, Librarians!

Greetings, Librarians!

Introductions are in order. I'm Ali, Talia's new assistant and your Macmillan Library news bearer. It's a pleasure to reach so many exceptional book stewards all at once. I'd like to start by letting you in on a few of my favorite things.

Aside from raindrops, roses, and whiskers on kittens, my favorites are as follows: my all time favorite novel is One Hundred Years of Solitude, but at heart, I'm a real scifi junkie. My favorite library in the US is the Seattle Central Library. What can I say? I'm loyal to my hometown shelves. However, my favorite library on the planet is Strahov Monastery’s Theological Hall in Prague.

Prague.

Nothing beats this gape-worthy library on a hill with illuminated manuscripts and a cabinet of curiosities, for goodness' sake! The fact that they brew some amazing beers at the same monastery doesn't hurt.

That’s a little about me. I look forward to popping up in your inbox (and RSS feed!) until I get the chance to shake your hand.

yours, Ali

Today’s Debut

Today’s Debut

Noam Shpancer's stunning debut, The Good Psychologist, opens as a psychologist
reluctantly takes on a new client—an exotic dancer whose severe anxiety
is keeping her from the stage. The psychologist, a solitary
professional who also teaches a lively night class, helps the client
confront her fears. As the shell of his detachment
begins to crack, he suddenly finds himself too deeply involved, the
boundary lines between professional and personal, between help and
harm, blurring dangerously.

"An intense and engrossing read." --Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

"Shpancer's authentic debut incorporates therapy-heavy diversions throughout, weaving together clinical and personal experiences." --Booklist

An Austen Remix that Stands on its Own!

An Austen Remix that Stands on its Own!

"Nobody, I believe, has ever found it possible to like the heroine of Mansfield Park." --Lionel Trilling

Well, that's been changed. Lynn Shepherd has taken the classic work and turned it on its head. Unlikeable characters are now charming. The honest now scheme. And now, there's a murder.

But Murder at Mansfield isn't just for the Jane Austen fan. It stands on its own as a fantastic mystery. Maybe you don't need zombies to bring new readers to the classics!

"First-timer Shepherd remains true to Austen's style while providing a sound pzuzle. Janeites may be delighted or appaled, but more impartial readers will find much to enjoy." Kirus Reviews (starred review)

A Malice-ful Debut!

Ex-cop Moriah Dru thought she was on vacation, but that ends when a local judge asks her to help find missing sisters. And a snitch reveals that Moriah's only chance to find the sisters is before they're flown out of the country, to Costa Rica.
