Tuesday Fun Day! (1/17/2012 Edition)

Happy Tuesday, all!

As you can probably guess, we're frantically finishing up last minute packing for ALA Midwinter. We're off to Dallas early (read: REALLY early) Thursday morning to scope out the convention hall and set up our booth (#1509)!

- Add our events to your Midwinter schedule and RSVP today for the annual BookTalk Breakfast!

And whether you're joining us in Dallas or not, we are running two contests that you'll want to take a look at.

- Enter to win a copy of A TRICK OF THE LIGHT signed by Louise Penny!

- Enter to win copies of all the books from the 2011 Featured Cover column of our e-newsletter!

And we'll leave you with a little inspiration from Martin Luther King, Jr.,

"Human progress is neither automatic nor inevitable... Every step toward the goal of justice requires sacrifice, suffering, and struggle; the tireless exertions and passionate concern of dedicated individuals."

Monday Fun Day! (11/7/2011 Edition)

We are busy, busy, busy little bees here in the Library Marketing Department, so I'll keep this short and sweet!

- We're delighted and honored to have two books listed among the top ten of Publishers Weekly's Best Books of 2011: THE MARRIAGE PLOT by Jeffrey Eugenides and ONE DAY I WILL WRITE ABOUT THIS PLACE by Binyavanga Wainaina. We'll explore the full list later this week because we have a whole pile of excellent books that made their way onto that list, but for now let's celebrate! See the full list of books here.

- Last week I joined the lovely ladies of HarperCollins and Random House Books On Tape upstate for NYLA's Mystery Slam! If you missed the book buzz (and the wine!) see our full list of presented titles here.

And if the blah weather is getting you down, now's the time to seek the company of hot beverages, excellent books, and close pals. Cuddle up!

You can see the full list of 2011 Macavity Award winners and 2011 Anthony Award winners at Lesa's Book Critiques.

Banned Books Week BannerBanned Books Week is just around the corner which means it's time to pull your favorite banned book off the shelf and remember what exactly makes that book important and unbannable to you. We also highly recommend you get involved with ALA's Virtual Read-Out on YouTube.

The Virtual Read-Out information page offers suggestions for the types of videos you can upload to their stream:

1) You can submit a video no more than two minutes long of a reading from a banned or challenged book.

2) A video of an eyewitness account of local challenges can be submitted. This video should be no longer than three minutes long.

Finally, we have to feature a few of these brilliant miniature paper sculptures that are mysteriously appearing in libraries across Edinburgh. Enjoy!

Monday Fun Day! (9/12/2011 Edition)

Welcome to a new week, librarian friends!

Let's kick things off with an excellent quote from Augustine Birrell:

"Libraries are not made; they grow. Good as it is to inherit a library, it is better to collect one."

Tomorrow Talia will be chatting about our steamiest Romance titles in a FREE Booklist webinar: "Ready for Romance? New Novels and Hot Trends." Join us!

Also, FSG has asked you early readers of THE MARRIAGE PLOT to weigh in: Team Leonard or Team Mitchell? Sound off!

Trivia Question: A. What are these creatures? B. Why are they so cute?!

Tuesday Fun Day! (9/6/2011 Edition)

Happy Tuesday, fellow bibliovores!

Apparently today is National Read a Book Day, but we're pretty skeptical about this whole "reading" business, so we're going to hang back and see how it goes this year before getting involved. 😉

- We're excited to see that David Bezmozgis' THE FREE WORLD has been longlisted for the 2011 Giller Prize! You can watch David read a short excerpt from the beginning here.

- RANCHERO earned a third(!) starred review, this time from Publishers Weekly. It reads,

"Full of inspired comic hyperbole, Gavin’s rollicking debut does for the Mississippi Delta what Tim Dorsey and Carl Hiaasen do for Florida. [...] Readers will eagerly await Reid’s next adventure in the Delta."

- Vanity Fair held an informal interview with Jill Abramson, author of THE PUPPY DIARIES. What is her idea of perfect happiness? Reading the Sunday Times on a sunny beach. What is her greatest extravagance? Replacing a pair of Lucchese cowboy boots after Scout gnawed the toes off the first pair. Read more here

- In Nonfiction news, THAT USED TO BE US by Thomas L. Friedman and Michael Mandelbaum made it on to EarlyWord's New Title Radar this week.

Finally, to properly celebrate Labor Day, we've included these ridiculous .gifs of kittens hard at work:

See more kittens in the workplace here.

Monday Fun Day! (8/29/2011 Edition)

Well, folks, we made it to Monday. I hope your weekend was relatively uneventful. To those of you who experienced flooding and property damage, we're thinking of you and crossing our fingers for a smooth recovery.

- Amidst all the bad news, we have great news: we're delighted to welcome Kym Giacoppe--former member of Penguin's rockin' library and academic marketing team--to Macmillan! She's now working with the St. Martin's Press trade marketing team and we're thrilled she's in the building!

A TRICK OF THE LIGHT comes out tomorrow and if you're as excited as we are, you might want to check out this insightful interview with Louise Penny.

- Did you know that Library Journal has a Tumblr? Now you do: http://libraryjournal.tumblr.com/.

The Beach Pack Giveaway is now closed and we'll have a winner for you in the next few days, so keep an eye on your inbox.

- Finally, we're still coveting these totally ridiculous tees from Unshelved. "Much Ado About Kittens" might as well be the tagline for this department.

Monday Fun Day! (8/22/2011 Edition)

Happy Monday, my plucky librarian friends!

It's time for another Monday Fun Day recap of awesome tidbits we didn't get to chat about last week.

- First item of business is the cover unveiling for Amanda Hocking's Trylle trilogy (see above)! Amanda is quite taken with these fancy covers and we are, too! The series will be released in early 2012 (each including never-before-seen Trylle short stories) and we expect high demand so be prepared.

- Congratulations are in order for all the 2011 Hugo Award-winners! See the full list of winners and nominees here.

- If the excellent reviews didn't convince you that Amy Waldman's THE SUBMISSION is something special, then maybe the Nancy Pearl stamp of approval will: see her tweet here.

- In contest news...

Bryan Kratish of the Millhopper Branch Library in Alachua County won The Omen Machine Awesome Stuff Giveaway!

Also, before I left for vacation I promised you a beachy prize pack giveaway upon my return, but I've failed you by waiting so long to give you the details. Forgive me! I will post the contest this afternoon, so check back.

Until then, look at this:
