Brad Parks at Books and Crannies

Brad Parks at Books and Crannies

In today's (excellent, as always) issue of Shelf Awareness, our favorite literary zen masters showcased an unexpected friendship between Virginia-based author Brad Parks (EYES OF THE INNOCENT) and a small town bookstore in Terrell, Texas.

Back in August, Parks exchanged a few emails with Gayle Harris, a fan who happened to own a shop, Books and Crannies. After a few lively back-and-forths, Parks decided he needed to get out to Terrell to see this charming theatre-turned-bookstore for himself.

Ultimately, Parks warns readers that the article is "a cautionary tale for all you book peddlers out there--never write an author and tell him you love his book and own a bookstore. Chances are good he will do what I did: invite himself to your store for a signing." [...]

Interview with Stefanie Pintoff

Interview with Stefanie Pintoff

After adding a big ol' red star to their glowing review of SECRET OF THE WHITE ROSE, Publishers Weekly asked author Stefanie Pintoff a few questions about her early 20th-century NYC mysteries.

Pintoff says, "For SECRET OF THE WHITE ROSE, I wanted to explore the anarchist threat that was part of early 1900s New York City, creating a time of uncertainty much like the present, where we live with the constant threat of terrorism."

And how does she write period pieces with such rich details? "Like most historical writers, I use a variety of sources, from libraries to contemporary newspapers to old photograph collections."

Pintoff also talks about which came first, plot or characters, and who she considers to be her literary role models. Read the full Q&A here!  [...]

State of the Nation According to Books

State of the Nation According to Books

Justin Cartwright (OTHER PEOPLE'S MONEY) created an excellent list of ten novels that he believes best encapsulate the state of affairs of their respective societies. His list, published in the Guardian, includes socially poignant literature from Charles Dickens, John Updike, Salman Rushdie (a personal favorite), as well as Tom Wolfe's THE BONFIRE OF THE VANITIES, Marilynne Robinson's HOME, and Jonathan Franzen's FREEDOM.

Justin says, "When nations are undergoing some form of stress, be it financial or ethical or even military, state of the nation novels tend to be more numerous;  they come in many guises, but they have one thing in particular, that they provide a commentary or a judgment on the times." [...]

Deborah Eisenberg is a Finalist for the PEN/Faulkner

Deborah Eisenberg is a Finalist for the PEN/Faulkner

Huge congratulations to Deborah Eisenberg whose anthology, THE COLLECTED STORIES OF DEBORAH EISENBERG, has been named a finalist for the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction!

Eisenberg's stories have long been admired for their exceptional language and nuanced evocation of thought and emotion. In story after story, the dialogue is crisp, idiosyncratic, and revelatory, yet what is frequently revealed is, as Jean Thompson for the New York Times puts it, "her characters’ well rendered and profound unease at inhabiting an uneasy world."
