Happy #BookBday (6/3/14 Edition)

Happy #BookBday (6/3/14 Edition)

It's a sunny summer day, perfect for a #BookBday! Today we celebrate:

SAVE THE DATE by Mary Kay Andrews
Cara Kryzik is on the verge of becoming the go-to wedding florist in Savannah, even though she doesn't believe in love. But when her latest bride spirals into a crisis and the wedding is in jeopardy, Cara must come to the rescue and figure out what she believes in. “A deft mixture of romance and humor in a story featuring a likable protagonist and cute critters: It’s a date Andrews fans won’t want to miss.” — Kirkus Reviews

THAT SUMMER by Lauren Willig
New York Times bestseller Willig takes readers on a journey through a mysterious old house, a hidden love affair, and one woman's search for the truth about her past—and herself. “A well-rounded group of characters, clearly connected ties between alternating time periods, and a jaw-dropping conclusion make for one engaging story. Fans will appreciate the author's nod to her 'Pink Carnation' series, but this title can be read alone. A winning suggestion for any age, this satisfying novel could also be a strong book discussion selection.” Library Journal, starred review

SYLVIA, QUEEN OF THE HEADHUNTERS by Philip Eade
British journalist Eade debuts with a well-written biography of Sylvia Brett Brooke (1885-1971), a tale that doubles as a history of the last days of the Raj. Sylvia’s husband, Vyner Brooke, became the third White Rajah of Sarawak in 1917, and she dubbed herself 'queen of the headhunters' in her fanciful memoirs. Vivid portraits of some fairly crazy Brits and a way of life that deserved to be doomed.” — Kirkus Reviews

THE GIRL WHO WAS SATURDAY NIGHT by Heather O'Neill
An enchanting story of twins, fame, and heartache by the much-praised author of LULLABIES FOR LITTLE CRIMINALS. “O’Neill has written a marvelously intriguing novel of a family in dissolution, each member of which is richly and memorably characterized. The book is beautifully written, particularly rich in simile and metaphor ('The pink clouds in the sky were delicates soaking in the sink'; 'The notes from the piano were like raindrops falling on the lake'). Compulsively readable, THE GIRL WHO WAS SATURDAY NIGHT is a delight for any night.” — Booklist, starred review

Happy #BookBday (5/27/14 Edition)

Happy #BookBday (5/27/14 Edition)

Salutations and fine Book Day o'Birth to three historical novels:

DARK AEMILIA by Sally O'Reilly
Perfect for readers of Deborah Harkness, Paula Brackston, and Sarah Dunant, O'Reilly's 17th century tale of William Shakespeare's dark lady and one true love is full of sorcery and passion. “O’Reilly casts her story with witches, doomed royals, evil courtiers, and star-crossed lovers, as if it were a Jacobean play. But her finest accomplishment is not the tribute she pays to these historical figures, but the bold imagination she displays in bringing them together.” — Publishers Weekly

THE BEEKEEPER'S APPRENTICE: or, On the Segregation of the Queen by Laurie King
Full of brilliant deduction, disguises, and danger, this 20th anniversary edition of the first book of the Mary Russell–Sherlock Holmes mysteries is “wonderfully original and entertaining...absorbing from beginning to end” (Booklist).

HANNIBAL: Enemy of Rome by Ben Kane
Rome’s greatest enemy is Carthage, and Carthage’s greatest general is Hannibal—this is Hannibal’s story, as his personal quest for revenge after his confidant’s son is sold into slavery, leads to the greatest conflict of the ancient world.

Now let the festivities commence! (Or in modern parlance, let's have cake!) [...]

THE PLOUGHMEN by Kim Zupan

LILA by Marilynne Robinson

The Pulitzer Prize–winning author returns to the town of Gilead in an unforgettable story of a girlhood lived on the fringes of society in fear, awe, and wonder. “This third of three novels set in the fictional plains town of Gilead, Iowa, is a masterpiece of prose in the service of the moral seriousness that distinguishes Robinson’s work.” — Publishers Weekly, starred review

FULL MEASURE by T. Jefferson Parker
On Sale: October 7, 2014
From the New York Times bestselling and Edgar Award-winning thriller writer comes a powerful standalone novel in the tradition of Steinbeck's classic EAST OF EDEN about a young man risking everything for his family. “Parker’s evident talent for building tension, plus his sharp writing and characterization, makes this departure especially promising.” — Library Journal, pre-pub alert

BETRAYED by Lisa Scottoline
On Sale: November 25, 2014
In Scottoline's latest Rosato & Associates thriller, Judy Carrier must deal with her aunt's recent breast cancer diagnosis while investigating the sudden death of her aunt's friend, Emelia Juarez, who was an undocumented worker at a local farm.

THE KRAKEN PROJECT by Douglas Preston
The Kraken Project is a NASA initiative to send a probe to Titan, a large moon of Saturn; the author sells his premise by sheer force of will and with compelling characters and persuasive storytelling.

ON THE RAZOR'S EDGE by Michael Flynn
This magnificent and satisfyingly open-ended conclusion to the tale of the civil war between the Shadows of the Names is a beautifully told story with colorful characters out of the epic tradition.

THE TIME TRAVELER'S ALMANAC by Ann VanderMeer and Jeff VanderMeer
On the heels of the World Fantasy Award–winning THE WEIRD, the next genre-defining anthology from Ann and Jeff VanderMeer explores the popular world of time travel fiction. “The VanderMeers' latest giant anthology does the genre a great service, reaching back through that history for classics as well as newer pieces readers might have missed.” — Publishers Weekly, starred review

THE REVOLUTIONS by Felix Gilman
Gilman pens a sweeping stand-alone tale of Victorian science fiction, arcane exploration, and planetary romance. “Gilman pulls one surprise after another out of his hat, winking slyly as he does so, and floods of action never let readers come up for air. A remarkable, hugely enjoyable performance.” — Publishers Weekly, starred review

Thriller Thursday (5/22/14 Edition)

It's gray and gloomy here today—in other words, perfect weather to stay in this #ThrillerThursday and read these books:

BOOTY BONES by Carolyn Haines
In Haines's latest “entertaining” (Booklist) Southern mystery, Sarah Booth Delaney and her fiancé, Graf, are looking forward to their romantic vacation. That is, until Sarah's asked to look into the murder of a treasure hunter.

THE STRANGER YOU KNOW by Jane Casey
Secrets from Maeve Kerrigan's colleague DI Josh Derwent's past come back to haunt him—and their latest investigation—in Casey's newest thrilling book in the series. “...the Maeve Kerrigan series [are] all solid police procedurals with exceptionally well-drawn characters whose relationships continue to develop in each entry. Derwent, a brilliant copper in Maeve’s eyes despite his numerous personality defects, serves as a foil and balance for her, and, with him at the center here, this novel attains further complexity in the interplay of the police-force members. Prime crime fiction.” — Booklist, starred review

RESISTANT by Michael Palmer
In his final book, New York Times bestselling author Michael Palmer brings his medical expertise to the forefront in a novel that brings our worst fears of hospital contamination to light. Can a doctor uncover the cure? “This exciting, fast-paced thriller culminates a successful writing career for Palmer, who, in October 2013, died unexpectedly at age 71. Palmer drew upon his own extensive expertise in emergency medicine for such best-selling novels as EXTREME MEASURES and THE FIRST PATIENT.” — Library Journal, starred review

Buzz for A STING IN THE TALE

Buzz for A STING IN THE TALE

Spring is upon us, which means that everything is blooming (our sympathies to all you allergy sufferers), and where there are blooms, there are bees.

We've got a “buzz”-worthy must-read memoir for you: A STING IN THE TALE: My Adventures with Bumblebees by Dave Goulson

One of the U.K.’s most respected conservationists and the founder of the Bumblebee Conservation Trust, Goulson combines light-hearted tales of a child’s growing passion for nature with a deep insight into the crucial importance of the bumblebee.

It was a finalist for the Samuel Johnson Prize and named a Barnes & Noble Discover Selection, and received rave reviews from NPR, the Seattle Times, the New York Post, and Shelf Awareness:

“A STING IN THE TALE melts memoir and conservation issues into a sweet pot, moving from subject to subject very much in the manner of a foraging bee seeking flowers… Warm and delightful: I frequently found myself wanting to put it down to go bird and bee-watching, to find for myself the species he discusses.” — Amal El-Mohtar, NPR.org

“[A STING IN THE TALE] is both a whodunit as well as a revealing study of a bug on whom we depend a great deal.” The Seattle Times

“...Goulson transforms what could be dry material with a stinging wit.” — New York Post

“A charming and highly informative narrative about the anything-but-humble bumblebee.” Shelf Awareness
