Monday Fun Day! (8/29/2011 Edition)

Well, folks, we made it to Monday. I hope your weekend was relatively uneventful. To those of you who experienced flooding and property damage, we're thinking of you and crossing our fingers for a smooth recovery.

- Amidst all the bad news, we have great news: we're delighted to welcome Kym Giacoppe--former member of Penguin's rockin' library and academic marketing team--to Macmillan! She's now working with the St. Martin's Press trade marketing team and we're thrilled she's in the building!

A TRICK OF THE LIGHT comes out tomorrow and if you're as excited as we are, you might want to check out this insightful interview with Louise Penny.

- Did you know that Library Journal has a Tumblr? Now you do: http://libraryjournal.tumblr.com/.

The Beach Pack Giveaway is now closed and we'll have a winner for you in the next few days, so keep an eye on your inbox.

- Finally, we're still coveting these totally ridiculous tees from Unshelved. "Much Ado About Kittens" might as well be the tagline for this department.

Monday Fun Day! (8/22/2011 Edition)

Happy Monday, my plucky librarian friends!

It's time for another Monday Fun Day recap of awesome tidbits we didn't get to chat about last week.

- First item of business is the cover unveiling for Amanda Hocking's Trylle trilogy (see above)! Amanda is quite taken with these fancy covers and we are, too! The series will be released in early 2012 (each including never-before-seen Trylle short stories) and we expect high demand so be prepared.

- Congratulations are in order for all the 2011 Hugo Award-winners! See the full list of winners and nominees here.

- If the excellent reviews didn't convince you that Amy Waldman's THE SUBMISSION is something special, then maybe the Nancy Pearl stamp of approval will: see her tweet here.

- In contest news...

Bryan Kratish of the Millhopper Branch Library in Alachua County won The Omen Machine Awesome Stuff Giveaway!

Also, before I left for vacation I promised you a beachy prize pack giveaway upon my return, but I've failed you by waiting so long to give you the details. Forgive me! I will post the contest this afternoon, so check back.

Until then, look at this:

And so it was...

That Bryan Kratish* of the Millhopper Branch of the Alachua County Library District won The Omen Machine Awesome Stuff Giveaway!

Bryan will get an Omen Machine-branded hat, a bookplate signed by Terry Goodkind, and a hardcover of the epic new book.

Though I've never met the chap, I can pretty much guarantee that once Bryan gets his prize gear, he'll never take off that fetching cap.

As for everyone else, join us again for more contests! There are few things we love more than rewarding librarians for their hard work, so we run giveaways frequently.

Congrats, Bryan. Enjoy.

Wednesday Fun Day! (8/17/2011 Edition)

Wednesday Fun Day! (8/17/2011 Edition)

My friends, Hawaii was a dream come true! Just look how happy I was at my underwater tea party. I spent 90% of my time on the beach, eating pineapple, reading great books, and working on my sunburn. I'm also pretty sure I saw a turtle.

During my absence some serious shenanigans were afoot:

Talia fell into deep despair over my absence and caught THE FLU! Don't worry; she made a full recovery in time for my return. I felt horrible for her until I realized she totally spilled the beans on the top secret three armed dino project. Now that the dinos are out of the bag, I'll make sure to keep you updated on all of our 2012 YA business.

The 2011 PEN Literary Award winners were announced and we have a few favorites on the list: Essays from the Nick of Time: Reflections and Refutations, which won the PEN/Diamonstein-Spielvogel Award for the Art of the Essay, and Texas Tough: The Rise of America’s Prison Empire, which won the PEN/John Kenneth Galbraith Award for Nonfiction. There were quite a few exceptional runners-up on the list from Farrar, Straus and Giroux, as well.

The Arizona Republic wrote a feature story on one of our favorite blogging librarians, Lesa Holstine! Check out the picture they included of Lesa with some great Macmillan books. Photo credit: Carlos Chavez.

It turns out HBO likes Tom Perrotta's post-Rapture novel, THE LEFTOVERS, almost as much as the EarlyWord Galley Chat crew because they're adapting the novel into a tv show! See details here.

We'll be announcing the winner of THE OMEN MACHINE Awesome Stuff Giveaway this Friday, so check the site and your email!

And finally, tomorrow I'll be posting the beachy stuff contest I promised you guys in return for being good while I was gone.

when ali is away, the boss will play

when ali is away, the boss will play

Ali is in Hawaii and has left me in charge of the blog. BIG MISTAKE, FISH! (Did you know that I call her Fish?)

Mondays are usually the highlight of my week and they typically start with a medium iced coffee & an egg white wrap. Ali saunters in at the very late hour of 8:30 am (I’ve been at work for at least ten minutes already) and we talk about our plans to take over the world.

We start with a recap of everything that we’ve read over the weekend, all the cute animals we met, and then offer school-like book reports on movies or tv shows we’ve watched that featured kittens.

Ali then updates me on all of her current projects – right now she’s working on promoting our “Books for Teens” titles. As I may have mentioned on Twitter (y’all are following me, right?) I’ve decided not to create a brochure or poster highlighting our favorite YA-OKAY and teen friendly titles. I can’t tell you what I’ve decided to do instead but it includes a three-armed dinosaur hand-drawn by Ali.

That’s all. If I’m not too depressed I’ll check in again tomorrow.

Ali’s Hitting the Beach!

Ali’s Hitting the Beach!

Good morning, friends!

I have some very exciting news... for me. In, oh, I don't know, 1 hour and 47 minutes I will be heading out for a vacation!

I know, I know; I'll miss you, too.

It's going to get pretty quiet around the blog for the next week and a half, but you have plenty to do while I'm gone:

  1. - Read the August e-newsletter (and if you didn't get a copy, sign up now)!
  2. - Enter the THE OMEN MACHINE awesome stuff giveaway!
  3. - Browse the Winter 2012 Macmillan catalogs!
  4. - Check out the daily puppy (if it isn't already your homepage)!
  5. - Check out the daily Unshelved strip!
  6. - Check out the daily astronomy picture from NASA!
  7. - READ!

I'll be back on the 17th. Until then I'll be snorkeling, sippin' on piña coladas, and reading THE MARRIAGE PLOT and GLAMOUR IN GLASS (sequel to SHADES OF MILK AND HONEY).

Yes, I know you're jealous, but I'll cut you a deal: when I get back I'll give away some great bookish beach swag, okay? Okay!

Monday Fun Day! (8/1/2011 Edition)

Aaand we're back with another thrilling issue of Monday Fun Day

Last week we ran a series of posts on books for reluctant readers of the teen male variety called He's Just Not That Into Books. After you check out the recommendations under the tag "Just Not That Into Books," let us know what other titles have proved successful in grabbing the attention of young men at your library.

Also, if you didn't get your request in for a galley of Patti Callahan Henry's latest, COMING UP FOR AIR, there's still time! We have more ARCs that need good homes. For an advanced copy of COMING UP FOR AIR send your name, library, and full mailing address to Library @ MacmillanUSA.com.

NPR has taken an interest in a few of our more scandalous and dark memoirs. Melissa Febo, author of WHIP SMART (now in paperback), was interviewed about her experiences as a dominatrix in Manhattan on NPR's Fresh Air (the half-hour recording can be heard here).

And in Game On! 5 Winning Summer Sports Books, NPR recommended BASKETBALL JUNKIE, the "exceptional" and "often devastating" memoir of Chris Herren, former Boston Celtics player and raging heroin addict.

We hope you're getting in plenty of good summer reading! Enjoy the sun!
