Ron Charles gives Freedom to Oprah. Or something.

Ron Charles gives Freedom to Oprah. Or something.

Everyone says that book publishing rides on the backs of quickly melting glaciers. And that soon it will be lying motionless on the bottom of the Arctic Ocean along with the polar bears and unicorns.

Well that is NOT TRUE, because Ron Charles is here with his hip, inpsiring, and Beanie Baby-filled video reviews! Take the review for Freedom. It's AMAZING. My favorite is the sepia-tinted flashback to when the NYT first reviewed the book in the 19th century. Take a moment to watch it.

Puppies and kittens and a book I (gasp) didn’t love.

Puppies and kittens and a book I (gasp) didn’t love.

I think you all really need to see this picture. These are the lovelys that belong to Melissa Frain, an editor at Tor Books. See, editors are wonderful animal obsessed people just like everyone else! Not that we didn't all expect it.

And second, I finished a book that I didn't totally love. Gasp! Which is unusual for me, because I'm usually so effusive. Earlier today I finished American Gods by Neil Gaiman. Everyone had been telling me that the author is amazing, and I couldn't call myself a SF/F reader without having read Gaiman.

HEADS UP!

HEADS UP!

Holy freaking cow. No, really, seriously. There must be some sort of all-powerful Hindu deity up in here granting wishes.

One of my favorite books ever, Lamentation, is available as an ebook for $2.99.

Book three in the series, Antiphon, is out 9/14. And if you ask nicely I MIGHT be able to get you an ARC.

And Ken, if you're reading this, please get me the manuscript for book four. For each minute that I haven't read the manuscript, a puppy loses its wings.

We Love Lesa.

We Love Lesa.

We love all librarians equally. Except for the ones that we especially love. Like Lesa Holstine? Why? because she knows that the way into our hearts, and an endless supply of galleys, is talking about our books. But she went above and beyond a normal blog post with this amazing video extravaganza.

Thank you, Lesa!

Sneak Peak at our LJ Fall Announcements Ad!

Sneak Peak at our LJ Fall Announcements Ad!

Remember
when you were eight and you got your mom that amazing Mother's Day gift, which
your dad paid for, and you couldn't wait for her to see, so you gave it to her
four days early? Well this is exactly like that. I (Ben) designed a (possibly)
hilarious full-spread ad for Library
Journal
, and I just can't wait to show it
off.

Oh, and I
still give gifts early. Only I pay for them now. Usually.

Oops, I did it again.

Oops, I did it again.

So I've been in a bit of a reading frenzy lately. I mean, I'm always reading a lot, but it's been more than usual.

One of the latest books I've read wasn't a Tor book. It wasn't even a Macmillan book. Nope, it was an Orbit book. Oops. But yeah, still fantasy. The book? The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms.

"In an increasingly deep Zelaznyesque series of political maneuverings,
Yeine, nearly powerless but fiercely determined, finds potential allies
among her relatives and the gods who are forced to live in Sky as
servants after losing an ancient war." --Publishers Weekly (starred review)

Two mysteries. One Canadian, the other Icelandic. Seven starred reviews (Kirkus, we love you, but stop being... well... Kirkus). I'll let the reviews speak for themselves.

Bury Your Dead: "Brilliantly provocative" --Library Journal

"One of the most elaborately constructed and remarkably moving
mysteries in years." --Booklist

"Bring on the awards." --Kirkus

"Few writers in any
genre can match Penny's ability to combine heartbreak and hope in the same
