Day’s YA – ELEANOR & PARK

Hey, YA friends!

Have you ever loved a book so much that you read it again and again and it just keeps getting better? ELEANOR AND PARK is just that book…

ELEANOR & PARK by Rainbow Rowell
9781250012579
Ages 13 to 18

Eleanor & Park weren’t always Eleanor & Park. Their only connection was that they were both high school-aged teenagers that didn’t fit in.

Eleanor is the new girl in a school full of kids who’ve been together since Kindergarten. Tall, red haired, and always in mismatched outfits, Eleanor stands out. Her home life is no picnic either… Park (a half-Korean student in a predominantly white school) spends his time blasting The Smiths and ignoring everybody else around him.

Then one day, Eleanor sits next to Park on the school bus. And during their bus rides, our two favorite misfits slowly fall in friendship—and ultimately in love—while sharing comics and trading mixtapes.

ELEANOR AND PARK is heartwarming and heartbreaking. Eleanor and Park’s transition from seat mates to friends to lovers is seamless and authentic. Rowell truly captures the all-consuming intensity of first love and immediately transports readers back to high school (for better or worse). Kirkus Reviews describes the book best as “funny, hopeful, foulmouthed, sexy, and tear-jerking.” This beautiful novel is all of those things and more, and is perfect for fans of Rowell’s other work, as well as Jandy Nelson and John Green. readmoreremove

Day’s YA – IN PARIS WITH YOU

Happy Friday, YA pals!

This month’s theme of “books in translation” continues with a sweet French romance…

IN PARIS WITH YOU by Clémentine Beauvais
9781250299161
Ages 14 to 18
Available January 8, 2019 from Wednesday Books

When teenagers Tatiana and Eugene meet during a Paris summer in the suburbs, she is reading Jane Austen in her garden and he is a mysterious (and pompous!) visitor next door. Tatiana is instantly captivated and the pair summer in close proximity without ever fully connecting.

Fast forward ten years. Tatiana and Eugene, living their own very separate lives, run into each other on the Metro. As they slowly reconnect, the two find their roles somewhat reversed. Eugene is now the one overcome with feelings.

Will they be able to put their past behind and start anew?

This fun read was charming and humorous. Beauvais’ verse is incredible. The occasional rhymes are subtle and you may miss them if you’re not paying attention. And the delightfully satisfying ending is authentic without being predictable. This beautiful tale is ideal for anyone who enjoys their rom-coms sweet, but realistic (think ONE DAY meets ELEANOR & PARK meets I SEE LONDON, I SEE FRANCE). readmoreremove

Day’s YA – AFTERCARE INSTRUCTIONS

TGIF, YA pals!

We’ve made it to Friday and I don’t know about you, but I’m planning on spending my weekend working through my towering TBR pile (and inevitably adding to it at the Brooklyn Book Festival). If this title isn’t on your list, it should be!

AFTERCARE INSTRUCTIONS by Bonnie Pipkin
Available in hardcover and trade paperback from Flatiron Books
Ages 12 to 18

Seventeen-year-old Genesis (Gen) is having a very tough time. Her father died of a drug overdose, her mother can’t deal, and Gen’s boyfriend just abandoned her at Planned Parenthood. As Gen recovers from her procedure and attempts to heal (physically and emotionally), she realizes that the chaos surrounding her may be the path to her growth.

From the bucolic New Jersey suburbia to the gritty underground NYC theater scene, we follow Gen’s highs and lows (mostly lows). Gen’s past / flashbacks are uniquely captured throughout the book as a four-act play featuring stage directions and lighting cues.

Gen’s emotions are raw and real. The reader feels her deep angst, her profound grief, and ultimately, her hope, right along with her. And Gen is not alone in her authenticity: Delilah’s frustration as she witnesses her younger cousin’s downward spiral; Rose’s sincerity as she stands by her best friend; Seth’s kindness as he introduces Gen to an unexpected world that leads her through recovery. All of Pipkin’s secondary characters are as fully developed as our heroine. readmoreremove

Paris, 1889: In this city, no one keeps tabs on secrets better than treasure-hunter and wealthy hotelier, Séverin Montagnet-Alarie. To find the ancient artifact the Order seeks, Séverin will need help from a band of experts.
