Happy #BookBday to BRUTAL YOUTH

Happy #BookBday to BRUTAL YOUTH

Today we wish a happy #BookBday to BRUTAL YOUTH by Anthony Breznican! We buzzed about this debut coming-of-age story set in a Catholic High School from the Entertainment Weekly senior writer several months ago, and the hype has only grown since then.

Apple iBooks selected it as one of their ten best fiction titles of June, Parade.com featured it in their Father's Day Gift Guide, and Breznican was interviewed on NPR's Weekend All Things Considered (air date tk) and Southern California Public Radio!

Of course, EW gave it a half-page write up in their June 13 issue and featured an essay from Breznican on their Shelf Life blog today (natch).

Praise for BRUTAL YOUTH:

“Debut author (and senior staff writer at Entertainment Weekly) Breznican captures a perfect balance of horror, heartbreak, and resilience and takes the high school novel into deeper places. Great for the beach but not just a summer read.” — Library Journal, starred review

“If you thought high school was hell, has Anthony Breznican got a story for you… By turns funny and terrifying, BRUTAL YOUTH is an unputdownable tour-de-force, a REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE for the 21st century.” — Stephen King

“Breznican has accomplished that rare feat of unflinchingly exposing the high school experience in all of its hilarity, vengeance, and terror. You'll think Roald Dahl just went for a swim in the world of John Hughes and came out wearing prison stripes.” — Jason Reitman, Academy award-nominated writer/director/producer of JUNO, THANK YOU FOR SMOKING, and UP IN THE AIR

Coming to ALA Annual? Make sure to meet Anthony Breznican

Friday Reads: Minotaur Stars Edition

Friday Reads: Minotaur Stars Edition

At last! FRIDAY! Woohoo! We're especially happy to dig our grubby little paws into these two Minotaur mysteries, both of which have multiple starred reviews!

Talia still has goosebumps from THE FROZEN DEAD by Bernard Minier
A suspenseful and chilling murder mystery set in a high-security asylum for the criminally insane and the snowy mountains of the French Pyrénées.

“The pervasiveness of evil in this tense and disturbing novel makes for very compelling reading, with the suspense bordering on horror. It should appeal to those who enjoyed Pierre Lemaitre’s ALEX as well as the edgier Scandinavian thrillers.” Booklist, starred & boxed review

“French author Minier’s assured debut adroitly combines a genuinely creepy series of crimes, a literally chilling atmosphere, and a dogged detective.  Minier’s execution equals his considerable cleverness.” Publishers Weekly, starred review

“Complex, fast-paced, and completely absorbing, Minier's wickedly plotted mystery has already been published in numerous languages and found a place on international best sellers lists. Thriller and crime fiction fans will have a hard time putting this mix of police procedural and psychological thriller down.”
— Library Journal

Anne is all about COLDSLEEP LULLABY by Andrew Brown
Sunday Times Fiction Prize winner Brown brings his intelligent and compelling police procedural set in Stellenbosch, South Africa and starring flawed Detective Eberard Februarie to America for the first time!

“With its lush, detailed descriptions, Brown's debut successfully captures both the beautiful landscapes and the violent textures of South Africa's racially charged history. Try pairing with Paul Thomas's New Zealand-set series (Death on Demand).” Library Journal, starred review & Debut of the Month

“A London Sunday Times Fiction Prize winner, this outstanding series debut from South African Brown introduces tormented Det. Insp. Eberard Februarie. Fans of gritty procedurals in unfamiliar settings will look forward to the next book.”
Publishers Weekly, starred review

“Brown skillfully creates a handful of compelling and well-drawn characters and offers a plausible sense of a country still consumed by racial tensions and suspicion of immigrants from other African nations. American devotees of international crime fiction will embrace the emotionally scarred Eberard and the fractious society that is at once exotic and all too familiar.” — Booklist

A Super-Sized Summer Thriller: THE KILLS

A Super-Sized Summer Thriller: THE KILLS

If you attended Library Journal's “Day of Dialog” last week, you heard Picador publisher Stephen Morrison rave about Richard House’s THE KILLS. This epic thriller longlisted for the Man Booker prize is four books in one: Sutler, The Massive, The Kill, and The Hit. It begins with a man on the run and ends with a burned body, moving across continents, characters, and genres.

It's already received outstanding early praise and is showing up on Summer Reading Previews:

“In this remarkable, epic literary venture, a novel in four parts that was long-listed for the Man Booker Prize, House explores the collateral damage of our capitalist way of going to war…. Part Olen Steinhauer spy thriller and part Roberto Bolaño art novel, with a huge cast of characters, many Middle Eastern settings, and a puzzle of a time-shifting plot, THE KILLS is a work of intense artistic conviction and demands a serious commitment from its readers. They’ll be rewarded, even if the center of this dazzlingly large picture is elusive.” Booklist, starred review

House’s thousand-plus-page novel is an intense, frustrating yet unforgettable tale…. He presents intriguing characters and enthralling scenarios, then leaves readers to make sense of it all. This huge undertaking is notable for its ambition, and it seduces with both its shortcomings and its accomplishments.”
Publishers Weekly, a May 5 Pick of the Week

Engrossing… House’s four-part, 1,000-page novel of corruption and murder is a heady page-turner. Already a hit in the U.K., THE KILLS trots the globe with professional killers and military contractors, and earns its comparisons to John le Carré with a healthy dose of political intrigue.” Time Out New York

Nerds, stay calm… Richard House’s Booker-long-listed, 1,000 page, hallucinogenic fictional account of the Iraq War and its aftermath, THE KILLS, is finally released in the States [August 5].” New York Magazine

Thriller Thursday (6/5/14 Edition)

Thriller Thursday (6/5/14 Edition)

In today's #ThrillerThursday roundup, we've got a fallen detective, a couple of good private eyes, and a map-obsessed misfit clerk:

A DARK AND TWISTED TIDE by Sharon Bolton
In the latest Lacey Flint mystery, the detective—now part of the marine police—finds a shrouded body in the river. And that's just the first one... “Bolton...delights in a kind of gothic horror, weaving suspenseful tales featuring complex, often tormented characters. Just as readers think they know the killer's identity, there is another shocking twist in this...gripping tale by a master of the genre.” — Library Journal

THE DEVIL MAY CARE by David Housewright
In Housewright's “exceptional” (Publishers Weekly, starred review) latest Rushmore McKenzie novel, the search for a suddenly missing man entangles the unlicensed P.I. with one of the most powerful—and ruthless—local families. “Housewright not only delivers steadily growing suspense, but also provides a canny tour of the high and low life in and around the Twin Cities, including an unforgettable tour of the posh Lake Minnetonka. Housewright may be the best Minnesota Noir writer going.” — Booklist, starred review

BLACK CURRENT by Karen Keskinen
While investigating a local murder in an aquarium, P.I. Jaymie Zarlin stumbles onto new clues about her own brother's death three years ago. “Keskinen juggles multiple plotlines skillfully and develops secondary characters (notably Jaymie’s selfappointed personal assistant, Gabi Gutierrez) in this second entry in an appealing series.” — Booklist

THE CITY UNDER THE SKIN by Geoff Nicholson
The appearance of a group of mysterious women, their backs crudely and extensively tattooed with maps, draws together a cartography-obsessed misfit clerk from an antique map store, a petty criminal, and a ruthless but vulnerable killer and his disgruntled accomplice. “With its fast-paced, dryly witty dialogue; looming, darkened cityscapes; wonderfully offbeat characters, including an enforcer with childcare problems; and metaphoric riffs on disorientation, this is a hugely entertaining crime novel.” — Booklist, starred review
