Monday Fun Day! (7/25/2011 Edition)

Monday Fun Day! (7/25/2011 Edition)

It's Monday! Monday! Monday!

And we have galleys to send you! Patti Callahan Henry has written yet another insightful exploration of the human heart, COMING UP FOR AIR

UPDATE: We have sent out all of our COMING UP FOR AIR galleys. If you got one, enjoy!

Ellie’s world turns upside down after her controlling mother passes away and she sees her ex-boyfriend, Hutch, at the funeral. Ellie learns that he is in charge of a documentary that involved her mother before her death. He wants answers to questions that Ellie’s not sure she can face, until, when going through her mother’s things, she discovers a hidden diary – and a window onto stories buried long ago.

COMING UP FOR AIR will be available September 2011 from St. Martin's Press and is featured on the August 2011 Indie Next List. If you would like an advanced copy of COMING UP FOR AIR send your name, library, and full mailing address to Library @ MacmillanUSA.com.

Tomorrow Talia will be giving shout-outs to some hot new titles in a Booklist buzz webinar. Join us, Random House, and HarperCollins for an hour of library-specific recommendations! Sign up here.

Last week, many of our buddies over at Tor were singularly focused on San Diego Comic Con. If you're following them on Twitter you've undoubtedly seen an influx in geektastic tweets about panels, interviews, and costume sightings. I am, admittedly, quite jealous.

And finally, a head's up: for the rest of this week we'll be running blog posts on great books for reluctant readers of the teenage male variety. Tune in and tell us your favorites, too!

Our Top ALA Galley Picks

Our Top ALA Galley Picks

ALA Set up collage

Yesterday was The Day of the Box.

Thankfully Talia and I are experts at boxing and unboxing. In fact, as I once told Talia, I'm so good at boxing they named Muhammad Ali after me (true story).

Well, the boxes are gone now and we've transformed a sad, empty booth into an overstuffed cornucopia of literary joy. As we unpacked Talia and I reacquainted ourselves with all the wonderful books we brought.

When discussion turned to fisticuffs over which galleys we most wanted to see in the hands of librarians, we settled the score by bringing our thoughts to you. So here are our top ALA galley picks, come and get 'em!

Shadow Falls Book & Signed Poster Giveaway!

Shadow Falls Book & Signed Poster Giveaway!

All of twenty minutes ago, I remembered that during TxLA in April I got my hands on a beautiful Shadow Falls poster signed by the lovely C.C. Hunter!

So I'm pulling it off the shelf and giving it away to one lucky librarian along with a shiny finished copy of BORN AT MIDNIGHT, the first book in the Shadow Falls series. Here's a quick description to get you excited:

One night Kylie Galen finds herself at the wrong party, with the wrong people, and it changes her life forever.  Her mother ships her off to Shadow Falls—a camp for troubled teens, and within hours of arriving, it becomes painfully clear that her fellow campers aren’t just “troubled.”  Here at Shadow Falls, vampires, werewolves, shapeshifters, witches and fairies train side by side—learning to harness their powers, control their magic and live in the normal world.

Kylie’s never felt normal, but surely she doesn’t belong here with a bunch of paranormal freaks either.  Or does she?

To win the signed Shadow Falls poster and a copy of BORN AT MIDNIGHT send your name, library, and full mailing address to: Library @ MacmillanUSA.com subject: Shadow Falls!

[UPDATE:] This contest is now closed. Thanks to all who entered and congrats to winner Cort Kern!

Contest ended: Friday, June 17th 12pm EDT

Mary Kay Andrews Galleys Seeking a Ride to the Beach

Mary Kay Andrews Galleys Seeking a Ride to the Beach

[UPDATE]: I have sent out all of the galleys of SUMMER RENTAL that we had available. Thanks and enjoy!

The weather has finally taken a turn for the sunny here in NYC and it's time we all started thinking about swimsuits and sand.

I have a stack of galleys on my desk of Mary Kay Andrews' latest, SUMMER RENTAL, that need to find rides to the beach, ASAP. If you're an Andrews fan, or just looking for a book to keep you company in the sun, then shoot us an email with your name, library, and full mailing address and we'll send you a copy! Send requests to: Library @ MacmillanUSA.com

Library Journal highlighted SUMMER RENTAL in their "Women's Summer Fiction" section and gave it a big orange star. Their review reads, "Andrews (THE FIXER-UPPER) is at her warm and funny best with this story of three girlfriends who rent a beach cottage on North Carolina’s Outer Banks. A month of fun, frolicking, romance, and self-discovery ensues, while the arrival of a fourth roommate ratchets up the drama. Andrews simply excels at creating the kind of characters readers can relate to, and she has a fabulous sense of humor to boot. For all women’s fiction fans, especially those who enjoy ensemble fiction."

Publishers Weekly says, "This warm weather treat has a lot going for it, not least the sunny forecast that summer love can blossom into a four-season commitment."

An Obituary for Typewriters + GIVEAWAY

An Obituary for Typewriters + GIVEAWAY

You've probably heard the whispers by now: Godrej and Boyce, the last factory producing typewriters, halted production in 2009 and has now sold almost all of the inventory. The days of buying brand new typewriters are over.

Join us as we mourn the brief life of the typewriter that came into our lives clack-clacking away and fell silent all too soon. In celebration of this great literary tool, we're giving away three copies of 21 ESSENTIAL AMERICAN SHORT STORIES edited by Leslie M. Pockell. These stories (many of which came to life under the harsh rap of typebars) are bound with a bold keyboard cover design. It's gorgeous; you want it.

To enter: send your name, library, and full mailing address to: Library @ MacmillanUSA.com by April 27th at 5pm (EDT)!

[UPDATE]: False alarm! Typewriters are still in business. How embarrassing. But don't worry, the contest is still on!

[UPDATE 2]: Thanks to all who entered for a chance to win! The contest is now closed and the winners have been notified.

Deathless Release and Giveaway!

Deathless Release and Giveaway!

Last night Catherynne M. Valente celebrated the release of DEATHLESS, her folkloric novel that follows the rules of Russian fables. Between the pages you'll find the young and clever Marya Morevna, unwilling bride of Koschei the Deathless; also expect tricks and tasks from Baba Yaga, mischief from Stalinist house elves, magical quests, secrecy, bureaucracy, and games of lust and power.

Publishers Weekly calls it, "enchanting." Kirkus Reviews calls it, "dazzling." And Library Journal says it, "will cast a spell on readers and not let go. For fans of Neil Gaiman, Gregory Maguire, and the like, this is essential."

The most important thing to remember is that you have to actually read the book and stop staring at the bewitching cover. Yes, io9 called it, "the coolest looking book cover we've seen in ages," and yes, Tor.com ran a gushy article on Beth White's brilliant paper cut-out design, but you still have to look away to get to the words.

[UPDATE:] Thanks to all who entered! The contest is now closed and winners have been notified!

Yesterday I snapped up two hardcovers of DEATHLESS and if you want a chance to win one, send an e-mail to library @ macmillanusa dot com with your full mailing address today! I will notify winners tomorrow. [...]
