Monday Fun Day! (7/02/2012 Edition)

Monday Fun Day! (7/02/2012 Edition)

Happy Monday, library buddies!

- Today is the last day to enter to win a signed ARC of MR. PENUMBRA'S 24-HOUR BOOKSTORE! Enter here.

- Sign up now for the Booklist webinar version of Book Battle II: This Time It’s Personal

If you missed those legendary book brawlers, Cutie and Tiger (a.k.a. Chris Vaccari from Sterling Publishing and Talia Sherer from Macmillan), mixing it up at recent ALA conferences, now’s your chance to get a ringside seat—right in front of your own computer! The book battle is going virtual. Some critics charge that Cutie and Tiger have been a bit too nice to one another in their earlier exchanges. No matter. This time they assure us the gloves are coming off. When they climb out of the ring at the end of the hour, they will have left nothing behind—except, of course, for dozens of terrific new-book recommendations. Don’t miss this hour-long, free Booklist webinar moderator by Adult Books editor Brad Hooper. Register here.

- As promised, here's a link to the full read-alike list for The Great Nonfiction Read-Alike Panel from ALA Annual hosted on EarlyWord.com.

As always, Shelf Awareness brought us the good word on some exciting topics this morning:

- HBO will be adapting Tom Perrotta's post-maybe-rapture novel, THE LEFTOVERS! Perrotta and Damon Lindelof (Lost) will co-write the adaptation. More details here.

- They also linked to a very important BuzzFeed list: 12 Cuddly Bookstore Kitties. We highly recommend you take a minute to get to know these literary felines living the dream.

And finally here are two highlights from the Macmillan evening trip to Disneyland during ALA Annual...

Here we are enjoying a little In-N-Out burger before the rides:

Starred Audio Books Seeking Road Trips

Starred Audio Books Seeking Road Trips

Your audio-loving patrons will be delighted to hear that Publishers Weekly just gave starred reviews to two great Macmillan Audio books, THE LEFTOVERS and 40 LOVE.

Narrators Dennis Boutsikaris and Katherine Kellgren have made the already exceptional texts into enchanting experiences with their excellent storytelling. Sounds like the perfect time to take that road trip!

"Proving to be a superb narrator for Perrotta’s work, Boutsikaris’s quiet excellence is akin to that of the author." -Publishers Weekly on THE LEFTOVERS (starred review)

"Kellgren’s narration is marvelous, inhabiting various characters’ states of mind, shifting among anxiety, fury, and guilt as the book’s POV changes. A delightful performance not to be missed." -Publishers Weekly on 40 LOVE (starred review)

Wednesday Fun Day! (8/17/2011 Edition)

Wednesday Fun Day! (8/17/2011 Edition)

My friends, Hawaii was a dream come true! Just look how happy I was at my underwater tea party. I spent 90% of my time on the beach, eating pineapple, reading great books, and working on my sunburn. I'm also pretty sure I saw a turtle.

During my absence some serious shenanigans were afoot:

Talia fell into deep despair over my absence and caught THE FLU! Don't worry; she made a full recovery in time for my return. I felt horrible for her until I realized she totally spilled the beans on the top secret three armed dino project. Now that the dinos are out of the bag, I'll make sure to keep you updated on all of our 2012 YA business.

The 2011 PEN Literary Award winners were announced and we have a few favorites on the list: Essays from the Nick of Time: Reflections and Refutations, which won the PEN/Diamonstein-Spielvogel Award for the Art of the Essay, and Texas Tough: The Rise of America’s Prison Empire, which won the PEN/John Kenneth Galbraith Award for Nonfiction. There were quite a few exceptional runners-up on the list from Farrar, Straus and Giroux, as well.

The Arizona Republic wrote a feature story on one of our favorite blogging librarians, Lesa Holstine! Check out the picture they included of Lesa with some great Macmillan books. Photo credit: Carlos Chavez.

It turns out HBO likes Tom Perrotta's post-Rapture novel, THE LEFTOVERS, almost as much as the EarlyWord Galley Chat crew because they're adapting the novel into a tv show! See details here.

We'll be announcing the winner of THE OMEN MACHINE Awesome Stuff Giveaway this Friday, so check the site and your email!

And finally, tomorrow I'll be posting the beachy stuff contest I promised you guys in return for being good while I was gone.

BEA 2011 Recap

BEA 2011 Recap

Sorry for the late post, everyone!

I got a little caught up celebrating over my Publishers Weekly article that ran this morning and lost track of time. Okay, okay; I also had to watch this ridiculously cute cat video that people have been sending around the office. But now I'm really getting down to business, so I thought I would post a super quick recap of our BEA 2011 events.

Monday night we kicked off the conference with the Annual BookExpo America Librarians Dinner, presented by AAP and Library Journal. Nancy Pearl hosted the event with some great authors including, Dava Sobel, author of A MORE PERFECT HEAVEN. Oh, and the dessert was divine!

Tuesday we started off with The Great Readalike. If You Like This…You’ll LOVE That! in which a few of our favorite librarians sounded off about which books you might have missed in a few popular categories. If you want a taste, Lesa posted her readalikes on her blog! Then there was Back to Basics. Why Home Economics Books are the New Retro Chic, a fun panel introducing some great DIY topics to share with your crafty patrons. The BEA Librarians Author Lunch hosted by Nora Rawlinson of EarlyWord was overflowing with very excited (and very hungry!) librarians. We ran out of chairs fast, but thankfully everyone was fed. During the lunch Tom Perrotta, author of THE LEFTOVERS, told stories about his library experiences alongside other great speakers such as Chuck Palahniuk, David Baldacci, and more. Talia finished up the day giving book recommendations at the AAP Annual Librarians Book Buzz and a panel on Hot Fall Book Club Titles. Curious what she recommended? To name a few:

THE LETOVERS (Perrotta)
GLOW (Ryan)
THE SISTERS (Jensen)
THE AMERICAN HEIRESS (Goodwin)
THE HYPNOTIST (Kepler)
KILLED AT THE WHIM OF A HAT (Cotterill)
FREEDOM (Franzen)
BY NIGHTFALL (Cunningham)
THE MARRIAGE PLOT (Eugenides)
BEST FRIENDS, OCCASIONAL ENEMIES (Scottoline & Serritella)

Wednesday we sat in on a few informative panels discussing the future of collection development considering financial cutbacks, technological transition, and the ever-changing role of the librarian. Hearing about how these changes are tangibly taking shape in libraries straight from the mouths of librarians is invaluable to us and makes conferences like BEA entirely worthwhile. We finished up our conference at the 3rd Annual Librarian Shout ‘n Share which was a riot! Talia and I both added a few books to our TBR piles, were serenated with a little BROETRY, and learned a valuable lesson: never give librarians squeaky horns!

Our Rapture Reading Recommendation: The Leftovers

Our Rapture Reading Recommendation: The Leftovers

Should the Rapture fail to claim us (or, at least, some of us) tomorrow, we have a great Rapture reading recommendation to look forward to: THE LEFTOVERS by Tom Perrotta.

What if the Rapture happened and you got left behind? Or what if it wasn’t the Rapture at all, but something murkier, a burst of mysterious, apparently random disappearances that shattered the world in a single moment, dividing history into Before and After, leaving no one unscathed? How would you rebuild your life in the wake of such a devastating event?

If you're still around to read it...
