Well friends, the year is winding down. Macmillan offices will be closed for the holidays from December 24th until January 2nd and I'm heading home this Wednesday, so it's about to get pretty quiet on the blog.

Fortunately a bunch of wonderful librarians are chatting about their favorite reads from 2012 on Twitter all week (join them using #libfavs2012)!

Shelf Awareness featured the book trailer for the final installment of the Robert Jordan's bestselling Wheel of Time series, A MEMORY OF LIGHT, featuring Brandon Sanderson, Harriet McDougal, Tom Doherty, Jason Denzel, and Patrick Rothfuss. Watch it now:

Monday Fun Day! (11/14/2011 Edition)

Happy Monday, librarian friends!

- School Library Journal highlighted ACROSS MANY MOUNTAINS in their Adult Books 4 Teens section. They said,

"The author illuminates the lives of refugees, for whom safety in India is coupled with poverty and hard work, as well as on-going efforts to bring the Tibetan cause to the attention of world leaders. This book will appeal to teens interested in Tibetan Buddhism, as well as student activists interested in the Free Tibet movement."

- SFF twitter users rejoice! Today (Monday 11/14) Brandon Sanderson (@BrandSanderson) will be chatting with Tor (@torbooks) on Twitter at 1PM EST and you're invited. Just use the hastag #TorChat and jump on in with questions!

- Major congratulations to author Esi Edugyan for winning Canada’s 2011 Giller Prize. Picador will publish HALF-BLOOD BLUES this coming February.

- Kirkus Reviews has posted their 2011 Best of Fiction and we are proud to see quite a few Macmillan gems on the list. Take a peek at their full list here.

- And finally, on your lunch break, check out Nancy Pearl's Book Lust interview with Jeffrey Eugenides! Video hosted here.

Monday Fun Day!

Monday Fun Day!

Thanks to the sage adage of our ancestors, we know that Monday is, in fact, Fun Day, and it's high time we began treating it that way! Today we've got a veritable* smörgåsbord of library and literary goodness for you. Enjoy!

First and foremost, get up out of that rolly chair and join us in a standing ovation for the King County Library System, winner of the Gale/Library Journal Library of the Year Award.

"The innovations and programs, the creative management of KCLS resources, the ability to stretch but still serve the principles and core values of librarianship, the strong public support, and the vision for the system’s future make it clear that KCLS is more deserving than ever to be named Library of the Year." Library Journal

Hear, hear! I am particularly giddy about this announcement seeing as KCLS is the library system I grew up on. Way to go, KCLS.

In other super-awesome awards news, THE WAY OF KINGS by Brandon Sanderson won the 2010 DGLA Legend Award for Best Novel! And Simon Winder's travel romp, GERMANIA, was shortlisted for the 2011 Dolman Travel Book of the Year!

In getting-pumped-for-ALA-Annual news, Library Journal's Barbara Hoffert made a super convenient, printable PDF for this year's author signings and hot galley giveaways. View and print Barbara Hoffert's ALA Galley & Signing Guide 2011 here! Here's a sneak peek:

Barbara's ALA Picks

Oh, and a reminder for all you sci-fi fans: io9 is holding a book club discussion for THE QUANTUM THIEF on June 28th. I'll definitely be dropping by. Need convincing? Read the reviews!

And finally, this weekend I waited in line for a scrumptious burrito and morita lunch combo behind this brilliant fellow:

Never Underestimate

Seriously good taste, my friend.

Why I love fantasy. And our newest fantastic giveaway!

Why I love fantasy. And our newest fantastic giveaway!

So I just finished book two of Robert Jordan's The Wheel of
Time, The Great Hunt. It was a fantastic read, and reinforced my huge,
enormous, colossal love for fantasy. Jordan really stepped up the
intrigue in the second installment. While I loved the first book, I was a bit
worried that the series might devolve into a reductive battle of good and evil.
But in The Great Hunt, he shows that there are many more factions than
we had believed, and even within those factions there is infighting as goals
clash. [...]
