♫♪♫♫♪ Haaaappy Book Birthday to Youuuu, Happy Book Birthday to Youuuu! Happy BOOK Birthday dear:

FANGIRL by Rainbow Rowell
It's the #1 pick for the inaugural LibraryReads list this month, an Indie Next selection and has glowing reviews, including four starred pre-publication trades and love from Entertainment Weekly ("Consider me a fangirl of this charming coming-of-age tale”). That's more buzz than a gallon of coffee!

NINE INCHES by Tom Perrotta
The New York Times Book Review is just one of many raving about Perrotta's new short story collection: “His portrait of the suburbs as an essential, if at times heartbreaking, facet of our modern lives marks him as the descendant of such chroniclers of small-town America as Thornton Wilder, John O’Hara and Willa Cather.” Wow. LibraryReads Chooses FANGIRL and HOW THE LIGHT GETS IN! Oooh Yeaaaah!

LibraryReads Chooses FANGIRL and HOW THE LIGHT GETS IN! Oooh Yeaaaah!

FANTASTIC NEWS!

LibraryReads' inaugural recommendation list was posted this morning and two FANTASTIC Macmillan titles made the top ten! Before we talk about the books, here's a super quick refresher of the program:

LibraryReads is a new program which harnesses the value of "library staff picks" into a single nation-wide discovery tool, a monthly list of ten newly released must-reads.

LibraryReads LogoThe #1 pick for September which was nominated by the most librarians is a teen/adult crossover title, FANGIRL by Rainbow Rowell! It's a coming-of-age tale about family, first love, and fan fiction during a tumultuous freshman year of college by the award-winning and New York Times bestselling author of ELEANOR & PARK. The second Macmillan title selected for the list is Louise Penny's HOW THE LIGHT GETS IN, the latest exquisitely wrought installment in the award-winning and New York Times bestselling mystery series featuring Chief Inspector Gamache!

We have been championing these two incredible authors for a while now and we're ecstatic to see them both on LibraryReads' first list.

Become a Fan of Fangirl

Become a Fan of Fangirl

There are only two types of librarians reading this post right now, FANGIRL fans and librarians who have yet to read FANGIRL. Let's get everyone into the former category.

Cath is a Simon Snow fan. Okay, the whole world is a Simon Snow fan, but for Cath, being a fan is her life—and she’s really good at it. She and her twin sister, Wren, ensconced themselves in the Simon Snow series when they were just kids; it’s what got them through their mother leaving.

Cath’s sister has mostly grown away from fandom, but Cath can’t let go. Now that they’re going to college, Wren doesn’t want to be roommates so Cath is on her own. She’s got a surly roommate with a charming, always-around boyfriend, a fiction-writing professor who thinks fan fiction is the end of the civilized world, a handsome classmate who only wants to talk about words, and she can’t stop worrying about her dad.

For Cath, the question is: is she ready to start living her own life or will she just go on living inside somebody else’s fiction?

UPDATE! FOUR STARRED REVIEWS FOR FANGIRL:

"The novel’s brilliance comes from Rowell’s reimagining of a coming-of-age story’s stock characters (the reclusive writer, the tough-talking friend, the sweet potential boyfriend) as dynamic and temperamental individuals—which adroitly parallels Cath’s own fan-fiction writing process. [...] Absolutely captivating." Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

"A funny and tender coming-of-age story that’s also the story of a writer finding her voice. [...] Touching and utterly real." Publishers Weekly (starred review)

"The plot is multilayered and filled with complex subjects (such as divorce, abandonment, and mental illness) handled in a realistic manner, and the writing effortlessly and seamlessly weaves these threads together. This book will find a wide audience, especially among older fans of Harry Potter." School Library Journal (starred review)

"This is an epic writ small; the magic here is cast not with wands but with Rowell's incredible ability to build complex, vivid, troubling, and triumphant relationships. Fans of Eleanor & Park (2013) and other bookish, nerdy types will thrill at finding such a fantastic and lasting description of one of their own." Booklist (starred review)

Eleanor & Park Won the Boston Globe–Horn Book Award for Fiction!

UPDATE (6.19): We added a signed book sweepstakes to this post! See below for details!

We are absurdly happy to bring you the incredible (albeit totally unsurprising) news that Rainbow Rowell's young adult debut, ELEANOR & PARK, was awarded the 2013 Boston Globe–Horn Book Award for Excellence in Children’s Literature for Fiction.

Congratulations, Rainbow!! Bravo and well-deserved!

The announcement was made this past week at BookExpo America and we invite you to watch the video posted below—Rainbow comes on screen near the end.

horn book awards

"Rowell presents her teen protagonists’ intelligent observations, extreme inner desires, and irrational feelings through compelling alternating narrations. She imbues the novel with rich character development, a spot-on depiction of the 1980s, and powerful descriptive passages. [...] It’s an honest, heart-wrenching portrayal of imperfect but unforgettable love." —The Horn Book

Again, we're so excited to see Rainbow honored for her extraordinary work. She will receive her award this October at Simmons College in Boston.

We Called It

We Called It

This is just to say we told you so.

In fact, we've said it again and again: you must read ELEANOR & PARK! Rainbow Rowell has created a magnificent, heartbreaking, and uplifting novel that both your teens and adult patrons will love.

Still don't trust us?! Fine, but do you trust John Green? I thought so. He wrote a rave recommendation for ELEANOR & PARK in The New York Times.

He said,

"[T]he obstacle in ELEANOR & PARK is simply the world. The world cannot stomach a relationship between a good-looking Korean kid and Big Red. The world cannot allow Eleanor a boyfriend of any kind, because she’s poor and fat and dresses funny. The world cannot allow Park a girlfriend because he likes wearing eyeliner, and everyone knows that’s gay. The world is the obstacle, as it always is when you’re 16 and truly in love."

He also said,

"ELEANOR & PARK reminded me not just what it’s like to be young and in love with a girl, but also what it’s like to be young and in love with a book."
