Fiction books collage

We’re ending the month with a round-up of new fiction titles from September, including a tale of magical realism set on the coast of South Carolina, a collection of short stories by award-winning author Ling Ma, a story of intimacy and obsession from rural Paris to Pennsylvania, a recounting of a woman’s life through conversations with her counselor, and a tale of two women who can see soulmates in unexpected places.

OTHER BIRDS BY SARAH ADDISON ALLEN

A LibraryReads pick and an Indie Next pick!

“The biggest challenge for the reader is to try to not turn the pages so quickly in order to extend the fun. Intriguing details and magical realism are hallmarks of Allen’s fiction, along with a slow-burn mystery that connects the past and present… Readers who enjoy a Southern story, a touch of the unexplained, and works by Fannie Flagg and Karen White will all be delighted by this novel.”–Booklist, starred review

BLISS MONTAGE BY LING MA

An Indie Next pick!

“Ma uses elements of the fantastic but grounds them in a reality that is more recognizably our own… The ideas of home and belonging recur throughout the collection… Ma also writes about motherhood and academic life and abusive relationships. These are rich themes, and [she] explores them with the logic of dreams. Haunting and artful.”–Kirkus Reviews, starred review

THE BOOK OF GOOSE BY YIYUN LI

“Exquisite… Knives, minerals, oranges, and the game of Rock Paper Scissors sneak into Agnès’ narrative as she relates the trajectory of a once-unbreakable union. The relative hardness of those substances is a clue to understanding it all. Stunners: Li’s memorable duo, their lives, their losses.”–Kirkus Reviews, starred review

HOW NOT TO DROWN IN A GLASS OF WATER BY ANGIE CRUZ

“Throughout the sessions, with wit and warmth, author Cruz explores Cara’s [life]. The potency of Cara’s first-person voice as she speaks to the job counselor is undeniable… A poignant portrait of one fallible, wise woman and a corner of one of New York’s most vibrant immigrant communities.”–Kirkus Reviews

THE MATCHMAKER’S GIFT BY LYNDA COHEN LOIGMAN

“Loigman’s thorough exploration of turn-of-the century, Jewish immigrant culture and her smooth transitions into the 1990s give the reader a full and satisfying picture of Manhattan across the twentieth century. The details are painstaking but never tedious, and the relationships are exciting, sincere, and beautiful.”–Booklist
