Calling all constellation and zodiac enthusiasts. You are about to be introduced to hands down the coolest magic system I have ever read about! In Emily Cooper’s WHAT MAKES A MONSTER, an individual’s magic is based on the constellation dominant on the date of their birth. With dragons that breathe starlight, magic that runs on stardust, and constellations to get lost in, the world of this book is a glittering, celestial escape.

Celestine Savareau has spent the last two years rotting in prison for attempting to release the Darkbringer and end the world. But her conspirator and the mastermind behind the plan to bring down the stars, Aire, escaped that day with his “Thief” powers, which allow him to turn invisible and muffle sound, leaving Celestine to take the fall. When she is offered a deal for her freedom, Celestine has little choice but to accept, even if it means going after Aire, whom she still loves despite his abandonment, and working with Nightguard Kivessin. Kivessin’s mother was killed during Celestine’s arrest, so he despises her, and as a “Manipulator,” he has the ability to delve into her mind and memories.

This book has it all! The incredibly creative magic system, a true enemies to lovers arc between Celestine and Kivessin, a fierce anti-hero, and found community. But, it is also layered. Celestine goes through a journey from villain to victim to victor exploring themes and realities of trauma and co-dependant partnerships. This was a book I was quickly invested in. The perfect combo of HEAVENLY BODIES and DIVINE RIVALS.

As a “Mimic” myself, someone who can emulate any other sign after coming in contact with a magic wielder, I cannot wait to continue diving into this world in the rest of the duology.

Happy reading!
