Azul del Arroyo is secretly a necromancer; all she needs is a bone and a little magic to bring someone back to life. But when her sister dies (again), the government—namely one Emissary of the Lord Death—becomes suspicious of the circumstances around her death and takes Isadora’s bones. Azul is desperate to get her hands on her sister’s bones and bring her back, but the Emissary is around every corner, standing in her way. As Azul journeys through cities and courts, with the Emissary hot on her tail, she risks not only her own freedom but also the possibility of losing her sister forever.

Maria Z. Medina’s debut novel is an enchanting high-stakes adventure filled with political intrigue, rich worldbuilding, forbidden magic, and complex characters. Her writing is so lush and atmospheric that I was completely transported to the unique world she created. The cat-and-mouse game between Azul and the Emissary was such fun to follow, and their enemies-to-lovers journey is filled with so much delightful bickering and banter. I also loved the sister relationship between Azul and Isadora. Azul’s love for her sister is unwavering as she does anything in her power to bring her back. At its core, MISTRESS OF BONES is a story about love, loss, and the lengths we will go to for those we care about. This is a captivating read that will appeal to fans of Tamsyn Muir, Holly Black, and Jennifer L. Armentrout.

Happy reading!
