Evelyn has lived centuries-worth of lives, but she’s never made it to her eighteenth birthday. Whether she’s Branwen in present-day Wales, Adella in 2004 El Salvador, Thiyya in 1290 Mali Empire, Tobias in 1898 Austria-Hungary, or any of the many other people she’s been, the one constant is that she’s always murdered before she turns eighteen. The other constant is that her murderer is always Arden, a supernatural being whose soul is tethered to hers. Neither can be alive without the other and they’re destined to fall in love in every life they live, but that love always has a time limit, resetting like an overturned hourglass every time. In Evelyn’s current life, her little sister depends on her bone marrow transplants to stay alive, so Evelyn is determined to find a way to live past eighteen. To do that, she needs to find Arden (before they find her), figure out why she’s being hunted, and finally break the curse that has haunted her for her entire existence. And if she can do all of that without falling in love with Arden? Even better.
This book made me feel so many things—despair, hope, comfort, and heartache to name a few—and I’m going to be thinking about it for a long time. The writing is poetic and mesmerizing, and the love story is epic, brimming with yearning and romance. Evelyn and Arden’s tale is tragic, yet hopeful, and utterly breathtaking. If you’re looking for a transcendent book that gives you the same feeling you got after reading THE INVISIBLE LIFE OF ADDIE LARUE, DIVINE RIVALS, or THIS IS HOW YOU LOSE THE TIME WAR, this will fit the bill perfectly. Lauren Steven has written something truly special.
“An intriguing romantic fantasy with characters readers will root for.” —Kirkus Reviews
