Estela and her parents have been a trio for as long as Estela can remember. Moving from city to city as often as they have, they’ve learned to depend on each other. That all changes on a fateful day in New York City, when a mysterious black smoke kills everyone on the subway car, except for Estela. With her parents dead, Estela is completely alone, and falls into a deep and complicated grief. When a letter arrives at the hospital from an aunt she’s never heard of inviting her to live with her in Spain, Estela takes the offer, hoping to find answers to her many questions. But when she arrives in Spain, she has more questions than ever before. Questions like: Why does it seem like no one ever leaves this tiny Spanish town? Why does her aunt live in a massive, run-down castle? Why are there so many secrets surrounding the castle? Who is this boy living in the castle that only Estela can see? And, most of all, how is this all connected to the mysterious death of her parents? What Estela learns will upend everything she thought she knew about her family, her history, and herself.

With elements of Beauty and the Beast, Dracula, and The Haunting of Hill House, CASTLE OF THE CURSED is an atmospheric gothic tale rife with drama, romance, and intrigue. Garber’s writing is lush and imaginative, transporting readers to the haunted halls of a castle in northern Spain. And the plot is a unique blend of romantasy, horror, and mystery, with twists and turns that kept me guessing until the final shocking reveal. Hand this to readers who loved the swoony vampires of CRAVE by Tracy Wolff, the adventure of WHAT THE RIVER KNOWS by Isabel Ibañez, and the eerie house setting of MEXICAN GOTHIC by Silvia Moreno-Garcia.

“A brooding romance with a compelling, gothic setting.” —Kirkus Reviews

Happy reading!
