As the new year approaches, I (of course) get excited for all of the new YA releases up ahead, but I also look forward to catching up on some backlist titles still on my ever-growing TBR list. For my kindred spirits out there, I have a backlist recommendation to share with you that’s a fantastic read to kick-off your 2021 reading list with.

ya days

If you haven’t read THE GOOD LUCK GIRLS by author Charlotte Nicole Davis yet, there is no better time to catch up of this enthralling debut fantasy than this January when the brand-new paperback edition is set to release. If I had to describe this novel in 4 words, it would be this: QUEER BADASS FEMALE OUTLAWS. Need I say more?

Set in an alternate Wild West, THE GOOD LUCK GIRLS features a diverse cast of young women who are outlaws on the run from human and inhuman forces that are hunting them down after one of our girls accidently kills a man. In their brilliant fantasy debut novel, Charlotte Nicole Davis reclaims the narrative of the Wild West and gives it back to the community of black, brown, and queer women it once belonged to.

If one or more of the options below apply to you, this fantasy is your perfect match:

  • You’re looking to add more stories that celebrate Black Girl Magic to your bookshelf
  • You’re desperately awaiting the next season of HBO’s Westworld to drop
  • Queen & Slim was one of your favorite films of 2019

2021 is a huge year for this duology. The series is getting a new, illustrated cover look that will launch with the paperback edition of the first book on January 5th, 2021 and the epic conclusion to this riveting tale explodes onto the scene on August 10th, 2021 with the release of THE SISTERS OF RECKONING. New readers of this YA series won’t have to wait long to find out how it all ends. Don’t miss out on this harrowing and action-packed journey of five young women in search of freedom, justice, and belonging.

Happy Reading!
Isa 🙂
