And at the LibraryReads Librarian author lunch, Suketu Mehta talked about his own experiences and research for his new book, THIS LAND IS THEIR LAND: An Impassioned Argument About Immigrations and Its Discontents (Spring 2019): “Fear of migrants is doing incalculably more damage than the migrants themselves ever could. All evidence shows that immigrants enrich the countries that they move to.”

Last but not least, here’s what your librarian pals recommended at Library Journal‘s “Shout n’ Share” panel:

Stephanie Anderson, Assistant Director of Selection, BookOps/NYPL
INVISIBLE: The Forgotten Story of the Black Woman Lawyer Who Took Down America’s Most Powerful Mobster by Stephen L. Carter
“Carter’s grandmother was a spectacular woman. This is a 100% true story, but reads read like a legal thriller. Book groups are gonna eat this one up.”

INVISIBLE PLANETS: Contemporary Chinese Science Fiction in Translation by Ken Liu
“You May have missed this in hardcover, but it’s coming in paperback. It’s hard to please voracious SF readers, so here is how you get them. And if you’re not a SF reader this is a good gateway book.”

Gregg Winsor, Readers’ Advisory Specialist, Johnson County Library, Overland Park, KS
THE SILENT PATIENT by Alex Michaelides
“If [your patrons] liked THE WOMAN IN THE WINDOW, this is for them. It’s an intricately crafted psychological thriller.”

THE STARS NOW UNCLAIMED by Drew Williams
“If you liked Firefly, The Expanse…this has humor and is SF leavened with strong female characters. There’s lots of adventure and swashbuckling…”

TRUST ME by Hank Phillippi Ryan
“I love it when an author writes a book that is a psychological thriller, investigative procedural, and legal thriller all at once. TRUST ME is a riveting story of a traumatized journalist tracking a Casey Anthony-style murder case. Masterfully done.”

Shayera Tangri, Branch Manager, Porter Branch Library/Porter Ranch, CA
WHAT TRUTH SOUNDS LIKE: Robert F. Kennedy, James Baldwin, and Our Unfinished Conversation About Race in America by Michael Eric Dyson
“This is an unflinching look at race relations in the US over the last 50 years. It was a hard read, but I really appreciated it.”

FINDING BABA YAGA by Jane Yolen
“A short, written in verse, retelling of the Baba Yaga story.”

In the lightning round, we even got a shout-out from the floor for SMALL ANIMALS: Parenthood in the Age of Fear by Kim Brooks!
