Have you ever wondered how much easier life would be if you knew who your true love was at first sight? For the Hadley women, that is their reality, after receiving a gift from Fate. All of the women in Piper’s family have been able to sense their forever true love as soon as they meet them–it’s a feeling, a gut instinct, and a click into place. Piper dreams of the day that she will join the ranks of the generations of women before her by finding the one who will be her everlasting love story. And yet she’s worried that day will never come–her disability makes her feel singled out from the rest of her family, and when her parents announce their divorce, breaking their own forever love, she’s certain that she’s doomed as well.
But when she meets her match, Forest, at a party, she’s ready to win him over and prove to her aunts that she’s not an outcast and that she belongs with the generations of Hadley women before her. She’ll need help from her friends Diana and Leo to make sure she doesn’t mess up along the way–especially Leo, who has spent most of his high school years in relationships, and has therefore become a bit of an expert in love. There’s just one issue: Leo and Piper have barely spoken in six months, after he asked for a break from their friendship. When Piper finally convinces Leo to help her, she finds out that Leo called for a friendship break due to his own feelings for her, and she finds herself caught between her new, fated love, and her childhood best friend who she always secretly wished could be her future. Should she trust Fate’s promise, or take a chance and try to create her own story?
This book feels like drinking a warm cup of tea at the seaside, while listening to “Enchanted” by Taylor Swift. It’s magical and heartwarming, and so soft and fuzzy. You’ll begin to question “The Blessing” that Fate has given the family–is it a gift, or truly just a curse? While some characters in the family believe in it wholeheartedly, other people in Piper’s life believe it could be doing her more harm than good. The characters in this novel gave the story so much depth. Diana and Leo are incredible friends to Piper, and you get to see how they grow and develop in their own ways during their senior year. From family members to found family, everyone who guides Piper along the way does so with their words of wisdom and lessons from their own lives, showing her how family is not just born, but can also be built.
Piper is also an amazing main character. She’s relatable, she’s both hopeful for her future and yet sometimes rational and realistic to a fault, and she’s headstrong and determined. Her growth throughout the book is incredibly apparent, as she learns to trust herself and her own decisions and desires. She learns to set boundaries and stick to them, and follow her own heart rather than what people deem to be best for her. Her decision was never an easy one–you can feel her grappling with the potential consequences and possibilities of whoever she decides to love. And as you read through her struggles—from trying to come to terms with her parent’s divorce to living with her disability and how it makes her feel—it feels like you are right there with her as a friend. She’s impossible not to root for. Even after finishing this book, I find myself still reaching to pick it up and wanting to return to the characters and their lives. If you’re a fan of Marissa Meyer’s INSTANT KARMA or adorable rom-coms like LOVE & GELATO and TWEET CUTE, you won’t want to miss this one!
Happy Reading!
