This month was packed full of new nonfiction titles, including these three releases—from the hunt for a serial killer nicknamed the Mad Butcher of Kingsbury Run in 1930s Cleveland, to one woman’s story of growing up in and escaping from a religious cult, and an exploration of the murder trial of Leopold and Loeb in Jazz Age Chicago.

AMERICAN DEMON: ELIOT NESS AND THE HUNT FOR AMERICA’S JACK THE RIPPER BY DANIEL STASHOWER

2 starred reviews!

“[Stashower] deftly sets Ness’ battles against institutional antagonists against an engagingly told, suspenseful account of the search for a notorious killer… A riveting and illuminating account of an iconic figure’s involvement in a notorious murder investigation.”–Kirkus Reviews, starred review

“The combination of a baffling unsolved crime with a nuanced portrayal of an American icon adds up to another winner for this talented author.”–Publishers Weekly, starred review

UNCULTURED: A MEMOIR BY DANIELLA MESTYANEK YOUNG

“Mestyanek Young searingly captures the fear and intensity that were her constant companions in the Children of God, and she draws smart parallels between the dogmatic ‘indoctrination’ she encountered in both the cult and the Army… Readers won’t be able to put down this harrowing and enthralling memoir.”–Publishers Weekly, starred review

NOTHING BUT THE NIGHT: LEOPOLD & LOEB AND THE TRUTH BEHIND THE MURDER THAT ROCKED 1920S AMERICA BY GREG KING AND PENNY WILSON

“Offers true-crime fans some new angles to consider. A worthy addition to the voluminous literature on this famous case.”–Booklist
