To all appearances, Lily Sedako is an unexceptional retiree—a seventy-something single woman living in Chicago, her days filled with the routine tasks of normal life. But underneath that exterior, lies a remarkable past. A former CIA field agent, she spent her career in various Central Asian countries, but most notably in Hayalistan, a former USSR territory. But everything went sideways when Lily’s connections to the mountain tribes resulted in her being moved to a new post and Rani, the tribal leader and first democratically elected President was removed, presumed killed, in a coup back in 2002.

All of this is long behind her when she receives an anonymous package containing a magazine with an article about Hayalistan—an article with a previously unknown photo showing Lily in the background. This was no mistake—someone out there is trying to expose Lily, after more than two decades, for reasons unknown.

Lily, however, is no one’s pawn, even now. She’s determined to find out who is behind this, how they obtained these forbidden photos, and what their goal is before she is a casualty in someone else’s scheme.

Using hard won skills and personal connections from her former life, Lily is determined to unravel the machinations going on now and what really happened back in Hayalstan more than twenty years ago.

In a powerful novel about love, power, corruption, aging, trust . . . and revenge, BAD COMPANY reaffirms Sara Paretsky’s place as one of the pre-eminent crime writers of our time.

THE WEIGHT OF ANGELS by John Boyne

When the Marquis of Queensbury left his calling card at the Albemarle Club in February 1895, it bore only his name and five words, “For Oscar Wilde, posing Sodomite.” The celebrated playwright rose to the challenge and sued for the insult, a fateful decision which led to imprisonment, disgrace, and ultimately an early death. But what if he hadn’t responded this way? What course would Wilde’s life have taken?

John Boyne’s magnificent new novel, THE WEIGHT OF ANGELS, takes this fork in the road as a starting point and imagines what would have happened if Oscar were alive to bear witness to the momentous events of the first half of the twentieth century. How would his life have turned out, what might he have written, whom might he have met? Could the second half of his life have been as celebrated, dramatic, tumultuous, and exhilarating as the first?

In imagining the life that Oscar Wilde never had, John Boyne has written one of the great ‘what if’ stories of modern literature, giving the great Irish poet and playwright a fresh new voice and the opportunity to take an entirely different path through a world which was to change beyond recognition in a few short decades.

For the next fifty-plus years, he will experience triumph and tragedy, pleasure and pain, love and regret, all while witnessing the twentieth century unfold around him in this mesmerizing novel.

COUNTERTENOR by Anthony Roth Costanzo

The sound of a countertenor, often described as ethereal and otherworldly, is both familiar and foreign—it is a high voice type, somewhere between what we might expect of a male and a female opera singer. Though we recognize the countertenor range from countless pop stars, experiencing it within the context of opera, powerful and penetrating, and, most important, without any amplification, is unsettling, beautiful, and profoundly moving.

Countertenors today sing music written originally for castrati. Part oddity, part divinity, castrati are inextricably linked to the proliferation of opera from its inception in the seventeenth century through its expansion into the public sphere. The striking beauty of the male voice and the otherness of the sound make it fertile ground for creative invention and innovation, and evoke fascinating aspects of gender, sexuality, and identity.

In COUNTERTENOR, Anthony Roth Costanzo, one of the world’s leading opera singers—known in particular for his performance as Akhnaten in Philip Glass’s opera of the same name—takes us through both his life and the history of his rare and remarkable voice. With wit and humor, Costanzo explores fascinating contradictions contained within the countertenor and narrates his own musical education and interests. The result is a lively and stirring account of an art form in flux, a story of reinvention and a life lived in harmony with art.
