AMANDA’S PICK: NIGHT WILL FIND YOU by Julia Heaberlin | 9781250877079 | 6/20/23

The bestselling author of WE ARE ALL THE SAME IN THE DARK and BLACK-EYED SUSANS returns with the story of a reluctant psychic who is brought in to find a girl who went missing long ago.  The psychic twist drew me in, and the compelling characters and deeper exploration of the delicate dance between scientific truth and the things we can’t explain kept me hooked.

EMILY’S PICK: DARKHEARTS by James L. Sutter | 9781250869746 | 6/6/23

David and Chance used to be best friends and bandmates, but after David quit the band and they were launched into stardom—without David—things changed and they haven’t spoken in years. Now their third bandmate has died and the two are thrown back into contact, reconnecting in ways neither of them expected. James L. Sutter’s YA debut is a heartfelt, hilarious, and emotional story of queer love and self-discovery. David and Chance’s chemistry is undeniable, and I was so invested in their friends-to-enemies-to-frenemies-to-lovers journey as they learned more about each other and themselves along the way.

SAMANTHA’S PICK: THE GIRLS OF SUMMER by Katie Bishop | 9781250283917 | 6/6/23

Katie Bishop’s debut, THE GIRLS OF SUMMER, is a transporting and complex novel taking place during one life-changing summer in the Greek isles, and 15 years later, as Rachel grapples with the truth of her first love and the aftermath of the summer. Katie Bishop fills Rachel and Alistair’s story with so much raw emotion, characters who you truly get to know, and an exploration of memory and trauma that will hook readers in immediately. This is the perfect summer read, book club pick, and psychological journey.

MICHELLE’S PICK: THE LAST DROP OF HEMLOCK by Katharine Schellman | 9781250831842 | 6/6/23

The follow-up to LAST CALL AT THE NIGHTINGALE, Schellman’s latest novel is once again full of mystery and intrigue. Main character Vivian Kelly is working at the Nightingale, a speakeasy where patrons can set their troubles aside for a bit and drink and dance the night away. But when the doorman (who also happens to be her best friend’s uncle) is poisoned, things turn sinister. Suddenly, Vivian is faced with digging up dark secrets and discovering who has it out for those closest to her. I was utterly drawn in by the delightful jazz- and prohibition-era New York City setting of this novel and recommend it to anyone who wants to escape into an incognito yet high-stakes world where amateur female sleuths save the day.
