For today’s Forthcoming #FridayReads spotlight, we’re reading the perfect summer psychological thriller, combining wine-soaked summer days in a French villa by the sea with Lisa Jewell’s morally complex family dynamics and Ruth Ware’s modern gothic vibes: THE SAFE PLACE by Anna Downes.

We meet a woman whose life is in chaos and a man who has a problem–and both think they’ve found the solution in the other. The man hires her as a housekeeper/nanny at his remote estate, but there are some rules: request permission to use the landline, stay in the guest house (the family house is off limits), don’t post anything on social media, and finally, be cautious around the daughter.

This is a dark, wonderful debut, that draws you in with great writing and believable characters, then swoops in with a killer climax. Hand this one to fans of Sally Hepworth and Sandie Jones.
