Set in a city poised to boil over, THE DOORMAN is a finely honed thriller of ticking-clock suspense, one that crackles with tension, deceit, loyalty, and murder.
Chicky Diaz has spent years as the doorman at the Bohemia—New York City’s world-famous home of celebrities, financiers, and the cultural elite on Central Park West. He has had an inside look at the lives of its residents and a peek into how the one percent lives. Recently widowed and left in medical debt, Chicky continues to be the best of the best at his job, keeping to himself the secrets and lies that run through the building. But tonight, for the first time ever, as he gets ready for his shift, he tucks a pistol into his waistband. Someone is going to die.
As a thriller fanatic, I was hooked by this twisty, unpredictable book right up to the jaw-dropping final reveal. The layers of deception and intrigue kept me up at night, trying to piece together how the story would unfold. With multiple POV’s, readers dive into the minds of the Bohemia’s deeply complicated residents and staff—each hiding something, each a piece of the puzzle—as the story hurtles towards murder. With hints of The White Lotus, this novel is steeped in social commentary, unafraid to talk about issues everyone wants and needs to discuss.
THE DOORMAN is a true New York story that is bold, provocative and hard to forget. Exposing the darkness lurking behind the penthouse doors, this is a must read.
“Page-turning from the opening paragraph to its killer finale, the narrative combines noirish atmosphere with a sharp attunement to the particular depravities of ultrawealthy urbanites. Pavone’s provocative look at the city that never sleeps will keep readers up well into the wee hours.”—Publishers Weekly, starred
“Chris Pavone has always been good, but this novel is way better than good. The kind of novel that wins book awards. Cynical, tender, sharp, dense, funny, and loaded with inside dope about how New York works (and how it doesn’t). THE DOORMAN is a BONFIRE OF THE VANITIES for the 21st century. He gives it to both sides of the culture wars, and with both smoking barrels.”—Stephen King
