Our #FridayReads

Happy Friday, librarians!

It's that time of the week again in which Talia and I share with you what we're reading and loving.

Talia's reading:

THE HIGHWAY*
by C.J. Box

People in-house have been saying that this book does for highways what Psycho did for showers. Talia concurs (wide-eyed and whimpering a little).

*This title is available to download on Edelweiss; get whitelisted now.

Ali's reading:

ALL OUR PRETTY SONGS
by Sarah McCarry

And she's never been more homesick for the shadowy magic of the Pacific Northwest or more resentful that her ripped jeans are "not appropriate" for the office.

Our #FridayReads: Women in Disguise

Talia and I realized we're reading around the same theme this week: incognito women wreaking havoc on cities and men.

Talia's reading:

THE IMPOSTER BRIDE by Nancy Richler in which Lily, a mysterious mail-order bride, arrives in post-WWII Montreal only to disappear again leaving behind a new husband, a baby daughter, a diary, and a diamond.

Ali's reading:

BABAYAGA by Toby Barlow in which two ever-youthful witches, Zoya and Elga, arrive in 1950s Paris and encounter Will, a good-hearted Detroit ad man who might be working with the C.I.A., and Inspector Vidot who has the misfortune of being turned into a flea.

Today is also the last day to enter last week's #FridayReads sweepstakes for a signed copy of LOVE IS A CANOE! Details here.

Our #FridayReads + a Pop Quiz!

Happy #fridayreads, librarians! Talia and I are lost in some seriously excellent books this week...

Talia's reading:

BAD HAIRCUT: Stories from the Seventies by Tom Perrotta

I'm reading:

WITHOUT A SUMMER by Mary Robinette Kowal

THE HUMAN DIVISION by John Scalzi

And because I'm feeling fangirly I've got a tricky, little quick draw pop quiz/galley giveaway for ya...

Is the following quote from WITHOUT A SUMMER or THE HUMAN DIVISION?

"[S]he was of the opinion that if one was going to issue an invitation, one should be prepared to have it accepted."

I'll send a galley of both books to the first librarian to correctly guess in the comments below! (One winner. U.S. only.)

You can also download the WITHOUT A SUMMER e-galley from Edelweiss (here's how) and start reading THE HUMAN DIVISION in serial (would you like to know more?)!

Talia's Reading:

THE FIRE WITNESS by Lars Kepler (July, 2013)

You may remember Lars Kepler, the pseudonymous Swedish couple who charmed us all at the Mystery Authors Revealed Panel at PLA this year. Well, they're back with their third thriller after THE HYPNOTIST and THE NIGHTMARE!

Ali's Almost Done With:

A NATURAL HISTORY OF DRAGONS: A MEMOIR OF LADY TRENT by Marie Brennan (February, 2013)

I'm having way too much fun reading this book. These dragons are wild, fierce, and scary (read: they would make atrocious house pets). Also, there are mysterious goings-on involving smugglers and petrified dragon bones that I'm itching to get to the bottom of!

Expect to hear more about this one in the next Uncharted Pages...

Ali's About to Start:

WE KILLED: THE RISE OF WOMEN IN AMERICAN COMEDY by Yael Kohen, contributing editor at Marie Claire (October, 2012)

There are fifty years of stories about iconic comediennes in this book. I can't wait!

Look What Ali Found!

Today is book-swap day at the Flatiron building. 'Tis a rare and glorious day in which every department clears their shelves of extra and already-read books in order to make room for incoming titles. Then all the employees get to browse through the new-to-you pile!

Mostly it's all recent Macmillan titles, but anything goes. Just look at a few of the gems that I found...

Talia's reading:

A MURDER AT ROSAMUND'S GATE by debut author Susanna Calkins and she's delighted to report that it's catching her in the same way that Charles Todd's Bess Crawford series caught her.

Ali's reading:

JOHN DIES AT THE END by David Wong, a pseudonymous senior editor of Cracked.com, because she guzzled the
sequel, THIS BOOK IS FULL OF SPIDERS, and just had to go back and read the
first one.

We're both reading:

ROOKIE YEARBOOK ONE edited by fashion wunderkind Tavi
Gevinson (RookieMag.com) because holy crap this book is full of amazing stuff—honest articles, fashion shoot
photos, and glittery teen world gems (ie: stickers!).
