The Great Louise Penny Read-A-Like

The Great Louise Penny Read-A-Like

The latest Chief Inspector Gamache novel by Louise Penny, A TRICK OF THE LIGHT, is available today and if you or your patrons are as thrilled as we are, you might already be worried about what to read next. Well, worry not!

We were inspired by the excellent librarians on The Great Read-a-Like panel at BEA to offer a read-a-like of our own: a Louise Penny read-a-like. We've picked three books sure to offer the Penny fix you'll need.

1. WICKED AUTUMN by G. M. Malliet, available September 2011 from Minotaur/Thomas Dunne Books.

Library Journal made WICKED AUTUMN Debut of the Month and in their starred review said, "Malliet’s hero shows his dogged determination to bring justice to his people. You’ll marvel at the author’s low-key humor and crystal-clear depictions of small-town life. Yes, this is a true homage to Agatha Christie, but Malliet, like Louise Penny, brings a contemporary freshness to the traditional mystery."

2. A MURDER IN TUSCANY by Christobel Kent, now available from Minotaur Books.

Publishers Weekly gave A MURDER IN TUSCANY a starred review and said, "Kent combines rich atmospherics and fully realized characters with a deceptively simple puzzle in her outstanding second mystery featuring Italian PI Sandro Cellini (after 2010's THE DROWNING RIVER). [...] The sleuth's ingenious detection of evidence pointing toward foul play portends a long and successful series run. Louise Penny fans will find a lot to like."

3. DEADLY THREADS by Jane Cleland, now available from Minotaur Books.

Kirkus Reviews introduces their review to DEADLY THREADS as follows: "The coastal town of Rocky Point, N.H., would be a perfect site for a thriving antiques business if it weren’t for the sky-high homicide rate." Sound a little like Three Pines to anyone else? And yes, I may have really wanted to post the cover for this book again, but this small-town cozy by two-time Agatha Award-finalist Jane Cleland will have you curled up and lost in the story before you turn the first page.

Well, folks, we made it to Monday. I hope your weekend was relatively uneventful. To those of you who experienced flooding and property damage, we're thinking of you and crossing our fingers for a smooth recovery.

- Amidst all the bad news, we have great news: we're delighted to welcome Kym Giacoppe--former member of Penguin's rockin' library and academic marketing team--to Macmillan! She's now working with the St. Martin's Press trade marketing team and we're thrilled she's in the building!

A TRICK OF THE LIGHT comes out tomorrow and if you're as excited as we are, you might want to check out this insightful interview with Louise Penny.

- Did you know that Library Journal has a Tumblr? Now you do: http://libraryjournal.tumblr.com/.

The Beach Pack Giveaway is now closed and we'll have a winner for you in the next few days, so keep an eye on your inbox.

- Finally, we're still coveting these totally ridiculous tees from Unshelved. "Much Ado About Kittens" might as well be the tagline for this department.

Two Stars for End of Days

Two Stars for End of Days

The apocalyptic thriller END OF DAYS has reviewers comparing Robert Gleason to Cormac McCarthy, Robert McCammon, and Stephen King. Here's a quick look at what's in store:

Lydia Lozen Magruder—the great-granddaughter of a female Apache war-shaman—has seen visions of the End since childhood. She has constructed a massive ranch-fortress in the American Southwest, stocked with everything necessary to rebuild civilization.

Now her visions are coming true. John Stone, once a baseball star and now a famous gonzo journalist, stumbled across a plan to blast humanity back to the stone age. Then he vanished. Lydia’s only hope of tracking him down lies with her stubborn, globe-trotting daughter, Kate, Stone’s former lover.

Publishers Weekly calls Gleason "an expert on all things apocalyptic" and says, "It all adds up to a thrilling take on a frighteningly possible future, one that makes the journey in Cormac McCarthy's THE ROAD look like a stroll through the park."

And Booklist says, "Comparisons to Stephen King’s THE STAND and Robert McCammon’s SWAN SONG are well founded, but Gleason’s novel is in a class by itself."

NASA and Tor–Finally Going Steady

NASA and Tor–Finally Going Steady

Let's be honest, we've all been waiting for this announcement for a long time.

NASA and Tor have been making eyes at each other for years, insisting it was only mutual respect. Well, the rest of us were getting sick of it. Thankfully, they broke down and admitted they like like each other.

Here are a few highlights from the press release:

In an effort to introduce, inform and inspire readers about NASA, the agency's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. has partnered with Tor-Forge Books to develop and publish a series of science-fiction-themed books.

Referred to as "NASA Inspired Works of Fiction," these books will be based on concepts pertinent to current and future agency missions and operations.

Many people who work in science and technology often credit science fiction as a significant inspiration for their career choices.

NASA will pair scientists and engineers with Tor-Forge writers to help raise awareness and enhance public interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). NASA's goal is to attract and retain students focused on STEM studies, strengthening the agency and the nation's future workforce.

Here's to a very exciting and unapologetically nerdy union! We wish you only happiness in your deep future.

Two Stars for Ranchero

Two Stars for Ranchero

Rick Gavin's southern road-story debut, RANCHERO, is a hit and earning more stars than, well, the Texas state flag, for starters.

Down in the Mississippi Delta, Nick Reid has a simple job to do: repossess a flat screen TV from Percy Dwayne Dubois. But Percy Dwayne sees fit to go, the way his sort will, all white-trash philosophical and decides the world is stacked against him anyway. He hits Nick over the head with a fireplace shovel, ties him up, and makes off with the mint-condition calypso coral-colored 1969 Ranchero that Nick borrowed from his landlady. And he takes the TV with him.

Nick will do anything to get the Ranchero back. And it turns out he might have to.

"This first novel from Gavin is a little miracle. The dialogue is pitchperfect, Desmond and Nick are likable, tough-but-not-psychotic protagonists and the bad guys are an unsettling mix of stupid and deadly. [...] One of the most enjoyable crime debuts in a very long time." -Booklist (starred review)

"Gavin’s first novel is a sure winner. Reminiscent of Tim Dorsey’s 'Serge Storms' series but with a more likable protagonist, it will appeal to down-home good old boys and their armchair counterparts. Recommended." -Library Journal (starred review)

UPDATE: RANCHERO earned a third(!) starred review, this time from Publishers Weekly.
