Now You See Me: The Creepy Summer Crime You Need

Now You See Me: The Creepy Summer Crime You Need

S.J. Bolton's latest mystery NOW YOU SEE ME is covered in stars like midnight in backcountry Colorado. But you don't have to take my word for it...

"Bolton (BLOOD HARVEST, 2010, etc.) provides excruciating tension and much else. Romantics can drool over Jonesbury’s turquoise eyes; amateur psychologists can mull Lacey’s one-nighters; and Ripperologists can ponder theories of Jack’s real identity, one of which helps tie up the plot." Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

"Bolton's fourth thriller, a complex psychological puzzler, stands head and shoulders above other such efforts featuring a modern copycat Jack the Ripper. [...] Avoiding gratuitous violence, Bolton (BLOOD HARVEST) skillfully plays with the reader's expectations. Minette Walters fan will be pleased." Publishers Weekly (starred review)

"Bolton’s latest gothic mystery (after BLOOD HARVEST) is almost impossible to put down. [...] The twists keep coming, and the truth is not revealed until the final page in Bolton’s best novel yet." Library Journal (starred review)

BEA 2011 Recap

BEA 2011 Recap

Sorry for the late post, everyone!

I got a little caught up celebrating over my Publishers Weekly article that ran this morning and lost track of time. Okay, okay; I also had to watch this ridiculously cute cat video that people have been sending around the office. But now I'm really getting down to business, so I thought I would post a super quick recap of our BEA 2011 events.

Monday night we kicked off the conference with the Annual BookExpo America Librarians Dinner, presented by AAP and Library Journal. Nancy Pearl hosted the event with some great authors including, Dava Sobel, author of A MORE PERFECT HEAVEN. Oh, and the dessert was divine!

Tuesday we started off with The Great Readalike. If You Like This…You’ll LOVE That! in which a few of our favorite librarians sounded off about which books you might have missed in a few popular categories. If you want a taste, Lesa posted her readalikes on her blog! Then there was Back to Basics. Why Home Economics Books are the New Retro Chic, a fun panel introducing some great DIY topics to share with your crafty patrons. The BEA Librarians Author Lunch hosted by Nora Rawlinson of EarlyWord was overflowing with very excited (and very hungry!) librarians. We ran out of chairs fast, but thankfully everyone was fed. During the lunch Tom Perrotta, author of THE LEFTOVERS, told stories about his library experiences alongside other great speakers such as Chuck Palahniuk, David Baldacci, and more. Talia finished up the day giving book recommendations at the AAP Annual Librarians Book Buzz and a panel on Hot Fall Book Club Titles. Curious what she recommended? To name a few:

THE LETOVERS (Perrotta)
GLOW (Ryan)
THE SISTERS (Jensen)
THE AMERICAN HEIRESS (Goodwin)
THE HYPNOTIST (Kepler)
KILLED AT THE WHIM OF A HAT (Cotterill)
FREEDOM (Franzen)
BY NIGHTFALL (Cunningham)
THE MARRIAGE PLOT (Eugenides)
BEST FRIENDS, OCCASIONAL ENEMIES (Scottoline & Serritella)

Wednesday we sat in on a few informative panels discussing the future of collection development considering financial cutbacks, technological transition, and the ever-changing role of the librarian. Hearing about how these changes are tangibly taking shape in libraries straight from the mouths of librarians is invaluable to us and makes conferences like BEA entirely worthwhile. We finished up our conference at the 3rd Annual Librarian Shout ‘n Share which was a riot! Talia and I both added a few books to our TBR piles, were serenated with a little BROETRY, and learned a valuable lesson: never give librarians squeaky horns!

Hi everyone, I’m back to tell you about two great titles for 2011…

Jackie as Editor: The Literary Life of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis
Greg Lawrence

In case you missed it earlier this year, you should check out JACKIE AS EDITOR: THE LITERARY LIFE OF JACQUELINE KENNEDY ONASSIS by Greg Lawrence. History remembers Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis as the consummate first lady, the quintessential embodiment of elegance. But many people forget that after JFK and after Aristotle, Jackie enjoyed a long career as a book editor for almost two decades and worked on more than 100 books at Viking and Doubleday during the industry’s Golden Age. Lawrence, one of the authors whom Jackie edited, draws from interviews with more than 125 of her former collaborators and acquaintances in the publishing world.

Our Rapture Reading Recommendation: The Leftovers

Our Rapture Reading Recommendation: The Leftovers

Should the Rapture fail to claim us (or, at least, some of us) tomorrow, we have a great Rapture reading recommendation to look forward to: THE LEFTOVERS by Tom Perrotta.

What if the Rapture happened and you got left behind? Or what if it wasn’t the Rapture at all, but something murkier, a burst of mysterious, apparently random disappearances that shattered the world in a single moment, dividing history into Before and After, leaving no one unscathed? How would you rebuild your life in the wake of such a devastating event?

If you're still around to read it...

the Day: Oceana Authors Ted Danson and Michael D’Orso

Image of the Day: Oceana Authors Ted Danson and Michael D’Orso

Oh, how we love the Shelf Awareness gurus! They keep us updated, they get us thinking, and they tickle our funny bones every morning over coffee.

Today, they published the most charming picture of our buddy Ted Danson with OCEANA co-author Michael D'Orso and Prince Books owner Sarah Pishko.

Ted won us over during his keynote interview at the ALA Midwinter President's Program and now we just can't get enough of that smile!
