LJ Editors’ Fall Picks 2016

Library Journal editors recently revealed their Fall 2016 picks, including these three Macmillan titles:

Mad Men fans meet Lillian Boxfish, once the highest paid female advertising copywriter in America. When Kathleen Rooney’s novel LILLIAN BOXFISH TAKES A WALK (St. Martin’s, Jan. 2017) opens, it’s New Year’s Eve in 1984 Manhattan, and 85-year-old Lillian is preparing to leave her Murray Hill apartment to go to dinner at Grimaldi’s, her favorite Italian restaurant. Along the way, she takes a detour down memory lane, reflecting on her life and walking through the streets of the city. Rooney says her novel was inspired by the life of advertising pioneer Margaret Fishback, who made her reputation in the 1930s working for Macy’s.” — Wilda Williams readmoreremove

BEA 2016 “Shout ‘n Share” Picks

Lovely library friends, we’re having BEA withdrawal.

We had TOO MUCH fun, from Anne & Talia’s silly Macmillan Library genie skit to the #librariansonly “Mac Snack Book Attack” where Anne gave our personal book recommendations, ARCs & homemade cookies. We love ya.

AS the genie backstage Anne @ snack attack

Y’all love us, too! Check out the Macmillan books your librarian pals recommended at the annual BEA Shout ‘n Share panel:

Lesa Holstine, Collection Development Manager at Evansville Public Library (IN) loved Rae Meadows’s I WILL SEND RAIN (“It will make you really thirsty”), Linda Castillo‘s latest Kate Burkholder mystery, AMONG THE WICKED and Louise Penny‘s new Inspector Armand Gamache mystery, A GREAT RECKONING.

Tracy Babiasz, Acquisitions and Collections Manager at Chapel Hill Public Library (NC) adored Stacey Kade’s 738 DAYS (“If you want a romance with a little bit of thriller, this one’s for you”) and THE NEXT by Stephanie Gangi.

Chicago Public Library’s Stephen Sposato, Manager, Content Curation, raved about Max Porter’s GRIEF IS THE THING WITH FEATHERS and Ross King’s MAD ENCHANTMENT: Claude Monet and the Painting of the Water Lilies.

Vicki Nesting, Assistant Director at St. Charles Parish Public Library (LA) stayed close to home for her pick: LET THE DEVIL OUT by Bill Loehfelm, the next book in the New Orleans-set series starring cop Maureen Coughlin.

Panel moderator Wilda Williams, Library Journal fiction editor, fell for THE INVISIBLE LIFE OF IVAN ISAENKO by Scott Stambach and also enjoyed Sposato’s pick, MAD ENCHANTMENT.

See Wilda’s full LJ write-up of Shout ‘n Share here.

Librarians “Shout ‘n Share” Their Favorite BEA 2015 Picks!

Last Friday we rounded out a terrific BEA 2015 with the annual Shout ‘n Share panel. Here’s what your librarian pals found on the show floor to rave about:

Columbus Metropolitan Library’s Robin Nesbitt kicked it off with some genre love, highlighting THE TRAITOR BARU CORMORANT by Seth Dickinson (“It’s like THE HUNDRED THOUSAND KINGDOMS meets GUNS, GERMS, AND STEEL!”) and Sarah Ward’s debut mystery, IN BITTER CHILL, which she said is perfect for fans of Louise Penny, Sharon Bolton, and Elizabeth George.

New York Public Library/Bookops’s Charlene Rue was captivated by Damon Tweedy’s medical memoir, BLACK MAN IN A WHITE COAT, which was also a BEA Editor’s Buzz pick.

Massachusetts Library System’s Kristi Chadwick loved Elsa Hart’s historical mystery debut about an exiled librarian, JADE DRAGON MOUNTAIN. “The language, the prose is so beautiful it takes you into the story and keeps you going page after page.” She also gave two enthusiastic thumbs up for Jenny Lawson’s humorous memoir of mental illness, FURIOUSLY HAPPY, saying, “she knows how to hit the heart and make sure you know you’re not alone if you’re struggling with this.”

Baltimore County Public Library’s Jamie Watson tweeted that if she had more time she would have called out Maggie Mitchell’s PRETTY IS.

Library Journal‘s Wilda Williams shared that reading THE KILLING LESSONS by Saul Black “will make you want to lock all the doors in your house,” and she revealed that Saul Black is a pseudonym for bestselling author Glen Duncan, who wrote THE LAST WEREWOLF. She also recommended THE MARK AND THE VOID by Paul Murray, noting that “it has the same humor, warmth and pathos as SKIPPY DIES.”

From the floor, Michael Santangelo of Brooklyn Public Library gave a shout out to THE BURGLAR’S GUIDE TO THE CITY by Geoff Manaugh.
