Oh Happy Day—Meet Emily!

My name is Emily Day and I’ve just joined the Macmillan Library Marketing team as the Library Marketing Assistant & YA Specialist! Here are some fun facts about me:

1) I’m always reading. I have a Master of Arts in Children’s Literature, so I tend to gravitate more towards books for kids and teens, but I also like reading autobiographies and adult fiction.

2) I’m originally from Michigan, but I’ve also lived in Indiana, Singapore, Boston, and now NYC!

3) I worked at an independent bookstore in Boston called Trident Booksellers and Cafe, where I spent my days surrounded by books and tea and the best French toast you’ve ever had.

4) My preferred form of exercise is running. I will often listen to books or podcasts during longer, more grueling, runs.

5) I love travel! I studied abroad in Ireland during college and I used to be a fourth grade teacher at an international school in Singapore.

I’m so excited to be working with Talia and Anne! Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions and I look forward to meet you all in the near future!

Happy reading!

Dearest Librarians,
Once again, I’m baaaaack!! My maternity leave flew by and while it was bittersweet to leave baby Martin and big brother Daniel this morning, I’m so excited to be back and working with all of you again.

Now you might think I spent the last 3 months in a haze of snuggly cuddles and making fun family memories with trips to the beach, the zoo, and going apple picking (and you’d be right), but I also read a LOT:

EXPOSED by Lisa Scottoline
CLASS MOM by Laurie Gelman
SOURDOUGH by Robin Sloan (a LibraryReads pick!)
DEAR FAHRENHEIT 451: Love and Heartbreak in the Stacks by Annie Spence (another LR pick you loved!)
FRESH COMPLAINT by Jeffrey Eugenides
THE GREAT ALONE by Kristin Hannah
FORCE OF NATURE by Jane Harper
A DANGEROUS CROSSING by Ausma Zehanat Khan
THE HUSH by John Hart
GLIMPSE by Jonathan Maberry
BROKEN ICE by Matt Goldman
JAR OF HEARTS by Jennifer Hillier

And while we didn’t publish them, THE HATE U GIVE by Angie Thomas and YOU WILL KNOW ME by Megan Abbott (currently reading) are so, SO good. Happy reading, friends.

Anne’s Maternity Leave (Again!)

Did you know Anne is growing another little reader?!

Baby boy “Spark” is due to join big brother Daniel and family in a few short weeks on June 10 and Anne is working until she pops (not literally, we hope)!

While she’s out on maternity leave for 12 long, sleep-deprived weeks, Talia “boss lady” Sherer is your go-to gal for all your library marketing needs.

But don’t worry, we’ll make sure to share cute pictures of the little guy once he’s here.

Please be good to Talia!!!

Chocolates & care packages can be sent to the Flatiron Building in NYC.
That’s 175 Fifth Avenue, NYC 10010!

Cat in the Stacks

Friends, meet Frederick “Freddie” Paw Olmsted. He lives with SMP executive editor, Keith Kahla, who wants to tell you all about him:

Freddie in the Stacks-edit

“The cat is relatively new. He was a street rescue by a friend of a former assistant—a stray who was living on the streets of Bed Stuy (editor’s note: the cat, not the assistant). She took care of all the important vet stuff, but he and Otter, her rescue pit bull, weren’t the best of friends.”

Long story short, he came home with me.

Anne’s Back!!!

Dearest Librarians,
I’m baaaaack!! The last 12 weeks of my maternity leave have flown by and while it was bittersweet to leave my baby this morning, I’m so excited to be back and working with all of you again. So are my co-workers—just look at the fabulous balloons they surprised me with today! Thank you for being kind to Talia during my leave and make sure to give her extra hugs when you see her this weekend at ALA Midwinter.

Since I’m a mom now, I get to share pictures of my pride and joy, baby Daniel, with all of you (as well as a happy moment from my birthday yesterday). If you need more pics for a #cuteoverload emergency or to cure a bad day at work, email me. 😉

Happy Halloween 2014!

Talia’s dressed up as a “tennis star” (channeled by Shmackies), and Anne’s a pregnant nun (if anyone asks, it was immaculate conception).

Go crazy on the fun size candy and if you don’t have much of a sweet tooth, maybe these books as Halloween candy are more your treat! Happy Halloween!

BAILEY BOAT CAT: Adventures of a Feline Afloat
by Louise Kennedy

We want Bailey’s life: gazing wistfully out of portholes and lounging on the sun deck wearing our cat (ahem, human) lifejackets.

THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE FURRY: Life with the World’s Most Melancholy Cat by Tom Cox
You know how much we love AC from THE BEST CAT BOOK EVER, but there’s room in our hearts for another dark beauty: The Bear. He carries the weight of the world on his furry shoulders, and his owner Tom Cox regularly reports what’s got him down on the Why My Cat Is Sad Tumblr. Plus with three other cats besides The Bear in the mix, there’s more to love (and laugh about).

BONUS: Our good friend Katie Highland of Whittier Public Library in CA sent us pics of her adorable/mischievous furry friend Bruce that we just HAD to share with you:
