Day’s YA – WONDERFUL FEELS LIKE THIS

Hey, YA librarians!

When the fall frenzies are too much, read this quietly lyrical book for quick relief.

WONDERFUL FEELS LIKE THIS by Sara Lövestam
9781250095237
Ages 12 to 18
Also available in trade paperback

Fifteen-year-old Steffi Herrera is bullied by her classmates, her sister doesn’t get her, and all she wants in life is to become a jazz musician. While walking home from school one day, Steffi hears her favorite song emanating from the nearby retirement home. When she investigates the source, she meets Alvar Svensson, an aged jazz musician who dreamed of fame once upon a time.

The two grow close as Alvar recounts his life as a musician in WWII-era Stockholm and encourages Steffi to follow her heart. Steffi’s youthfulness and determination inspire Alvar to rediscover his spark for life.

WONDERFUL FEELS LIKE THIS is delightful. Alvar’s flashbacks blend seamlessly with Steffi’s present-day narration and their stories intertwine in unexpected ways. Their friendship illustrates the beauty and magic of intergenerational relationships. readmoreremove

In the tradition of Jandy Nelson and Rainbow Rowell comes a “sensitive and big-hearted”* debut novel of furious friendship, crazy love, and unexpected hope after a teen’s decision to end an unwanted pregnancy. “Genesis’s conflicted relationships with her mother, grandparents, and friends are as engrossing as her breakup with Peter, and her story packs a big emotional punch.” — *Publishers Weekly

Adapted from WITHIN ARM’S LENGTH for a young adult audience, a rare inside look at the Secret Service from an agent who protected Presidents George H. W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and George W. SLJ’s Spring 2017 Sneak Peek & Stars for Sara Lovestam!

We just couldn’t wait until next #ewgcya to share some great YA news with y’all. First, School Library Journal presented an exclusive sneak peek at their most anticipated Spring 2017 titles, including:

A CROWN OF WISHES by Roshani Chokshi
Chokshi further develops the world that she introduced in the New York Times-bestselling novel THE STAR-TOUCHED QUEEN.

THE INEVITABLE COLLISION OF BIRDIE & BASH by Candace Ganger
A horrifying tragedy links Birdie and Bash together—but neither knows it. They start to fall—hard—as the events of the tragedy unfold, changing both their lives in ways they can never undo.

DEAR READER by Mary O’Connell
When her favorite teacher Miss Sweeney doesn’t show up to class, Flannery knows something is wrong.

Click here to download the full SLJ Sneak Peek guide.

Next, Sara Lovestam’s WONDERFUL FEELS LIKE THIS has two starred reviews!

“Empathy, identity, and the transformative power of music bind this tale of an atypical friendship between a teenage outcast and a jazz musician. There’s a an easy, languid flow to Lovestam’s omniscient third-person storytelling as different characters take the spotlight, but the author doesn’t soft-pedal mortality, Alzheimer’s, or Steffi’s bullies—Steffi’s self-control is all the more courageous in the face of their genuine cruelty.” Publishers Weekly, starred review

“Sensitive and deeply moving: outstanding.” — Kirkus Reviews, starred review readmoreremove
