Happy #BookBday (3/8/16 Edition)

Happy #BookBday to these new titles on shelves now:

PEACEKEEPING by Mischa Berlinski
Two stars for this sophomore novel from National Book Award nominee Berlinski, in which a former deputy sheriff and failed politician takes a job in Haiti where he befriends an American-educated judge and falls in love with the judge’s wife. “[Berlinski] is a kind of heir to Graham Greene and Robert Stone, both for his excellent storytelling and for the way it can reveal a bigger picture.” — Kirkus Reviews, starred review

CRAZY BLOOD by T. Jefferson Parker
A ferocious rivalry between brothers takes place in the high octane world of Olympic skiing. “In a change of pace from his crime novels, three-time Edgar Award winner Parker delivers an intricate and atmospheric family drama reminiscent of the works of T.C. Boyle and John Steinbeck.” — Library Journal readmoreremove

Stars for PEACEKEEPING

You may remember Mischa Berlinski as the National Book Award-nominated author of FIELDWORK. Now he’s back with his daring, eagerly anticipated second novel, PEACEKEEPING.

It’s about Terry, a former deputy sheriff and failed politician, who takes a job in Haiti helping to train the police. There he befriends an American-educated judge & convinces him to run against a corrupt but charismatic Sénateur in an upcoming election. But when Terry falls in love with the judge’s wife, the electoral drama threatens to become a disaster.

PEACEKEEPING has two starred, pre-publication reviews:

“On the troubled half-island of Haiti, love, power, and poverty collide, as do a tough Florida cop, a beautiful singer, politicians, and the United Nations post-2004 peacekeeping mission… [Berlinski] is a kind of heir to Graham Greene and Robert Stone, both for his excellent storytelling and for the way it can reveal a bigger picture.” — Kirkus Reviews, starred review

“Berlinski follows his National Book Award-nominated debut with a compelling tale that again immerses readers in the intrigues of an enthralling locale. The Haiti [Berlinski] describes is one in which there are always multiple versions of the truth, some we can bear to tell ourselves, and others we cannot.”Booklist, starred review

LUST & WONDER by Augusten Burroughs
Augusten Burroughs is back! Longtime fans of the memoirist are going to be over the moon with this new work and with how the fearlessly candid author, most famously of RUNNING WITH SCISSORS, manages to reveal still more of himself. In an era of tedious oversharing, the memoirist who wrote two of the genre’s defining titles reminds us yet again why he is an unstoppable force.” — Booklist, starred review
