Obama ♥s FACTFULNESS & GMA’s End-Of-Summer Reading List

President Barack Obama announced his Summer Reading picks on Facebook, including our own Bill Gates-approved pick: “FACTFULNESS by Hans Rosling, an outstanding international public health expert, is a hopeful book about the potential for human progress when we work off facts rather than our inherent biases.”
“Good Morning America” also shared a roundup of “some of the buzziest books to pick up before Labor Day,” (along with an exclusive message from the author) including these five Macmillan titles:

EARLY WORK by Andrew Martin
“In EARLY WORK, I was trying to capture the recklessness of the last period of one’s youth, that feeling, true or not, that big decisions must be made before it’s too late. The novel follows a love affair between two writers that takes place over the course of a summer, and I’ve been told by readers that there are enough good times and bad decisions to fill a week on the beach, especially if interspersed with some good swims and cocktails and dog walks. The people in the book aren’t exactly role models, but so few of the people I know and love are! I hope readers will recognize some version of their past (or current!) selves in these characters, with a mixture of tenderness and, perhaps, regret,” Martin said.

HOW TO WALK AWAY by Katherine Center
Also available in audio
“I’m so excited for fans to read HOW TO WALK AWAY because summer is all about connecting with the good things in life — having adventures (or dreaming about them!), making time to see friends and family, soaking up the sunshine — and this is a story about people trying to do that, too,” Center said. “It’s a big-hearted, laugh-and-cry book about finding joy however you can, and I hope it’ll take you on a journey that’s much like the best vacations: satisfying and inspiring even long after summer’s gone.” readmoreremove

SHELTER IN PLACE by Nora Roberts
One of Publishers Weekly’s Spring 2018 Literary Fiction picks!Roberts’ latest polished novel delivers all the literary touchstones her fans have come to expect, including high-stakes suspense, a generous dollop of romance, a thoughtful exploration of the strong bonds of family and friendship that women create for themselves, and, of course, some HGTV fixer-upper moments. As a significant bonus, the book’s chilling, brutal opening scenes should be required reading for any politician waffling on the issue of gun control.” Booklist

PW Best Books of Summer 2017

PWSummer2017Publishers Weekly’s editors recently selected their Best Books of Summer 2017, including these seven Macmillan titles:
Staff Picks (full list)

BORNE by Jeff VanderMeer
“About that thing on the cover—is it a genetically modified bird-of-paradise? Some cousin of the odoriferous corpse flower? I was intrigued from the moment I saw it, as is Rachel, the postapocalyptic scavenger who finds the improbably sentient and mutable creature—who ‘smelled of beach reeds on lazy summer afternoons and, beneath the sea salt, of passionflowers’—while picking through the fur of the gargantuan flying bear that terrorizes her devastated city. And then things start to get weird.” — Carolyn Juris, features editor

ISADORA by Amelia Gray
“Gray’s most recent book, the story collection GUTSHOT, was weird as hell and as visceral as its title. Whose life would be better for her to fictionalize, then, than that of notorious mother of modern dance Isadora Duncan? An openly bisexual communist and atheist in an era that condemned all three, Duncan was famous for wearing long, flowing scarves even up until her death, when her scarf got caught in one of the axles of the car she was riding in. Flung from the vehicle, Duncan died of a broken neck—a tragic end that will surely make for a riveting finale in Gray’s novel.” — John Maher, assistant news editor

Fiction (full list)

THE PEOPLE WE HATE AT THE WEDDING by Grant Ginder
Ginder takes family dysfunction to its hysterical limit in this joyously ribald novel about siblings Alice and Paul begrudgingly attending the lavish wedding of their half-sister, Eloise, in England. Lovesick Alice and Paul—both in doomed relationships—see Eloise as the snotty daughter of a rich dad, and Donna, their mother, as a coldhearted widow who ditched all remnants of their father after his death. During the boozy pre-wedding days, the resentment and secrets come tumbling out in outbursts and hilariously bad decisions. readmoreremove
