Day’s YA – THE GIRL THE SEA GAVE BACK

Happy Friday, YA librarians!

Ready for the Norse Viking book of your dreams?

THE GIRL THE SEA GAVE BACK by Adrienne Young
9781250168481
Available September 3, 2019 from Wednesday Books
Ages 12 to 18

Adrienne Young’s debut and 2019 BFYA pick, SKY IN THE DEEP, was among my favorite 2018 reads. I know I’m not allowed to have favorites…but COME ON. It was AMAZING! But now it’s 2019… Enter: Young’s latest epic adventure, THE GIRL THE SEA GAVE BACK.

This standalone companion novel stars Tova, a Truthtongue (she can see the future) who washed up on the shores of the Svell clan as a child, and Halvard (remember the young boy in SKY IN THE DEEP?), who is about to become the opposing clan’s leader.

As the chapters alternate between Tova and Halvard, the conflict between their clans escalates. And although the Svell rely on Tova’s ability to see the future, her visions are not always well-received and she is blamed for their misfortune. As the battle rages, Tova must decide if she is indeed a Svell, or if she will finally find her true home elsewhere.

Day’s YA – FINALE

Welcome, welcome to the last Day’s YA from New York City’s Flatiron Building!

We are saying goodbye to our beloved and historic digs, so it seemed appropriate that I share Stephanie Garber’s final chapter in her award-winning and bestselling Caraval series.

FINALE by Stephanie Garber
9781250157669
Available now from Flatiron Books YA
Ages 13 to 18

Stephanie Garber introduced readers to the enchanting and magical world of Caraval back in January 2017. In FINALE, Garber bids farewell to sisters Scarlett and Tella—the duo we eagerly followed as they learned about love, loss, trust, and fate. In this epic conclusion, major secrets are revealed—both about the sisters and their mother—that might have earth-shattering consequences.

Stephanie Garber has created an absolutely stunning conclusion to the Caraval Trilogy. Between the spectacular world, the enchanting cast of characters, and the astonishingly high stakes, good luck catching your breath! Because the story is told by both Scarlett and Tella, we are offered insight into their individual motivations—something we hadn’t experienced in earlier books.

SHADOWSONG by S. Jae-Jones
In this conclusion to the gorgeous and lush Wintersong duology, Liesl finds that life in the world above is not as easy as she’d hoped, and she must return to the Underground to unravel the mystery of life, death, and the Goblin King—who he was, who he is, and who he will be.

SKY IN THE DEEP by Adrienne Young
Raised to be a warrior, seventeen-year-old Eelyn fights alongside her Aska clansmen in an ancient, rivalry against the Riki clan. Her life is brutal but simple: fight and survive. Fall 2019:

THE GIRL THE SEA GAVE BACK by Adrienne Young
9781250168481
Available September 3, 2019 from Wednesday Books
Ages 12 to 18

The new gut-wrenching epic from the New York Times bestselling author of SKY IN THE DEEP.
For as long as she can remember, Tova has lived among the Svell, the people who found her washed ashore as a child and use her for her gift as a Truthtongue. Her own home and clan are long-faded memories, but the sacred symbols inked on her skin mark her as one who can see into the future. She has found a fragile place among those who fear her, but when two clans to the east join together as one, her world is dangerously close to collapse.

“Halvard and Tova’s world is described as brutal and beautiful—their personal struggles with identity, fate, and community shine against the minimalistic plot and slowly building tension.” —Kirkus Reviews

UNSTOPPABLE MOSES by Tyler James Smith will be available in trade paperback on September 10, 2019

THE GRACE YEAR by Kim Liggett
9781250145444
Available October 8, 2019 from Wednesday Books
Ages 14 to 18

No one speaks of the grace year. It’s forbidden.
Girls are told they have the power to lure grown men from their beds, drive women mad with jealousy. They believe their very skin emits a powerful aphrodisiac, the potent essence of youth, of a girl on the edge of womanhood. That’s why they’re banished for their sixteenth year, to release their magic into the wild so they can return purified and ready for marriage. But not all of them will make it home alive.

“The bones of Liggett’s tale of female repression are familiar ones, but her immersive storytelling effortlessly weaves horror elements with a harrowing and surprising survival story. Profound moments lie in small details, and readers’ hearts will race and break right along with the brave, capable Tierney’s.”
Kirkus Reviews, starred review

“This dark tale, often reminiscent of William Golding’s Lord of the Flies and Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale, is both disturbing and uplifting . . . This is a novel that will appeal to those who like dark stories with fairy-tale elements; highly recommended as a book group discussion choice.”
School Library Journal

WAYWARD SON by Rainbow Rowell
9781250146076
Available September 24, 2019 from Wednesday Books
Ages 13 to 18

The eagerly anticipated follow-up to CARRY ON by #1 New York Times bestselling author Rainbow Rowell.
The story is supposed to be over. Simon Snow did everything he was supposed to do. He beat the villain. He won the war. He even fell in love. Now comes the good part, right? Now comes the happily ever after . . . So why can’t Simon Snow get off the couch? What he needs, according to his best friend, is a change of scenery. That’s how Simon and Penny and Baz end up in a vintage convertible, tearing across the American West. They find trouble, of course. (Dragons, vampires, skunk-headed things with shotguns.) And they get lost. They get so lost, they start to wonder whether they ever knew where they were headed in the first place . . .

Day’s YA – UNSTOPPABLE MOSES

Hello, YA librarians!

Welcome to the 20th edition of Day’s YA!! (20?! Holy guacamole!) If you’d like to go back and read past reviews (like THE HAZEL WOOD, SKY IN THE DEEP, HOW I RESIST, or LEGENDARY), check out the archives here or at the bottom of this post. Otherwise, let’s get right to it!

UNSTOPPABLE MOSES by Tyler James Smith
9781250138545
Available September 11, 2018 from Flatiron Books
Ages 12 to 18

Moses Hill is a high school junior living in the Midwest with his cousin / best friend, Charlie. Moses and Charlie grew up together and are notorious for pulling mostly-harmless pranks. One night their prank goes horribly awry and burns down a building. Moses is blamed and as punishment ends up spending a week as a camp counselor. He can either use the time to “prove [he’s] a responsible member of society” or lose his shot at Duke. But, when Moses is assigned as a “buddy” to younger camper, Lump (yes, Lump), he begins to truly learn who he is and how to heal from his own trauma.

I love when a book grabs me from the get-go. The first sentence, “Charlie Baltimore murdered me when we were eight years old,” was just the hook I needed! As the story progresses, it becomes a beautiful (and, at times, hilarious) coming-of-age story about dealing with the effects of trauma and putting the broken pieces of your life back together. In the vein of John Green and Stephen Chbosky, this debut novel is one that will grab onto you with all its might. readmoreremove
