Day’s YA – UNSTOPPABLE MOSES

Hello, YA librarians!

Welcome to the 20th edition of Day’s YA!! (20?! Holy guacamole!) If you’d like to go back and read past reviews (like THE HAZEL WOOD, SKY IN THE DEEP, HOW I RESIST, or LEGENDARY), check out the archives here or at the bottom of this post. Otherwise, let’s get right to it!

UNSTOPPABLE MOSES by Tyler James Smith
9781250138545
Available September 11, 2018 from Flatiron Books
Ages 12 to 18

Moses Hill is a high school junior living in the Midwest with his cousin / best friend, Charlie. Moses and Charlie grew up together and are notorious for pulling mostly-harmless pranks. One night their prank goes horribly awry and burns down a building. Moses is blamed and as punishment ends up spending a week as a camp counselor. He can either use the time to “prove [he’s] a responsible member of society” or lose his shot at Duke. But, when Moses is assigned as a “buddy” to younger camper, Lump (yes, Lump), he begins to truly learn who he is and how to heal from his own trauma.

I love when a book grabs me from the get-go. The first sentence, “Charlie Baltimore murdered me when we were eight years old,” was just the hook I needed! As the story progresses, it becomes a beautiful (and, at times, hilarious) coming-of-age story about dealing with the effects of trauma and putting the broken pieces of your life back together. In the vein of John Green and Stephen Chbosky, this debut novel is one that will grab onto you with all its might. readmoreremove

Happy #BookBday to these big new releases!

SHELTER IN PLACE by Nora Roberts
A June 2018 Indie Next pick and a Publishers Weekly’s Spring 2018 Literary Fiction pick! “Roberts’ latest polished novel delivers all the literary touchstones her fans have come to expect, including high-stakes suspense, a generous dollop of romance, a thoughtful exploration of the strong bonds of family and friendship that women create for themselves, and, of course, some HGTV fixer-upper moments. As a significant bonus, the book’s chilling, brutal opening scenes should be required reading for any politician waffling on the issue of gun control.” — Booklist

THE SUMMER I MET JACK by Michelle Gable

The New York Times bestselling author imagines the affair between JFK and Alicia Corning Clark — and the child they may have had. “Gable seamlessly weaves this modern love story with history, ensuring romantic tension that doesn’t end with the acceleration of Jack’s career. Based on real events, this compassionate and intelligent blend of Adriana Trigiani’s ALL THE STARS IN THE HEAVENS and Bill Dedman and Paul Clark Newell Jr.’s EMPTY MANSIONS offers massive cross-genre appeal.” — Library Journal, starred review

Day’s YA – CARAVAL

Hi friends!

Welcome to the sixth installment of Day’s YA! If you’re new here, my name is Emily Day and I’m the newest member of Team Library Marketing at Macmillan. If you’re not new here, you may have noticed that we switched up our logo a bit, so be on the lookout for this new logo for all things YA-related.

Now on to an enchanting YA fantasy novel that I’ve absolutely fallen in love with.

CARAVAL by Stephanie Garber
9781250095251
Also available in audio
Will be available in trade paperback May 1, 2018
9781250095268

Ok, so I know I’m about a year late to the game (ha, I promise that was an unintentional pun) with this one, but please allow me my delayed obsession with this book. In the case that you, like me, have not yet discovered CARAVAL, here’s the gist: Scarlett has spent her entire life longing to participate in Caraval, the interactive, week-long game/performance that only happens once a year. When Scarlett’s cruel father arranges for her to marry a man she’s never met, Scarlett’s hopes are dashed . . . until her invitation to the game finally arrives and Scarlett and her younger sister Tella, along with a mysterious (and oh-so-dreamy) sailor they’ve just met, make their way to Isla de los Sueños to play. Everyone keeps telling Scarlett that it’s only a game and everything that happens during Caraval is merely a performance, but things become much more real when Tella is kidnapped by the game’s mystifying mastermind, and finding her becomes the only way to win the game.

I’m pretty sure I read this book in about a day and a half because I just couldn’t bear to put it down. The world is unique and imaginative and I felt like I was right there with Scarlett, wandering around and getting joyously lost (though maybe not quite as lost as her, thanks to the handy map in the novel’s front matter). Lots and lots of people are comparing this book to THE NIGHT CIRCUS by Erin  Morgenstern, but I’ve never read THE NIGHT CIRCUS, so I can’t necessarily endorse that comparison. However, I can say that it’s got bits and pieces of lots of brilliant YA elements. There’s the game-that’s-more-than-just-a-game aspect à la THE HUNGER GAMES; the forbidden, but chemistry-filled romance similar to that of Edward and Bella; and the magical world that feels very Wonderland-esque. But the amazing thing is that Garber manages to take all of those classic elements and make something completely new and extraordinary. Simply put, CARAVAL is magical. And with such a clever and twisty ending, THANK GOODNESS the magic doesn’t end here. The sequel—LEGENDARY—will be available May 29, 2018 [insert all celebratory emoji here]! readmoreremove
