#PubDay (4/16/19)

On this #pubday, we celebrate time travel–to a 19th century French vineyard, to breaking codes in Asia post-WII, to the beginnings of American Libertarianism or through objects themselves…

THOMAS AND BEAL IN THE MIDI by Christopher Tilghman

“Lovely literary fiction for not only fans of Tilghman’s previous work but for anyone interested in that age-old question, What is true love?”–Library Journal

CREDO: The Rose Wilder Lane Story by Peter Bagge

“The idiosyncratic, independent life and work of Rose Wilder Lane—Laura Ingalls Wilder’s conservative daughter—gets its due in this spiky graphic biography by Bagge… This loopy, frantic, and personality-packed tribute is fitting for one of America’s lesser-known gonzo feminist writers.”–Publishers Weekly

THE TIME COLLECTOR by Gwendolyn Womack
“Flashbacks to different times in history enrich the story with both tragedy and hope. For fans of historical fiction who like a hint of the supernatural and cosmic connection.”–Booklist

Happy #BookBday (6/6/17 Edition)

Oh what a lovely day for a #BookBday, especially when they’re great summer reads!

THE PEOPLE WE HATE AT THE WEDDING by Grant Ginder
One of Entertainment Weekly‘s Summer’s Must-Read Books and PW‘s Best Books of Summer 2017 with two starred reviews! A bitingly funny, hugely entertaining novel in which a fractured family from the Chicago suburbs must gather in London for their eldest daughter’s marriage to an upper-crust Englishman. “Ginder takes family dysfunction to its hysterical limit in this joyously ribald, sharply cynical, and impossible-to-put-down examination of love and loyalty.” — Publishers Weekly, starred review

THE ANSWERS by Catherine Lacey
One of Buzzfeed’s “Exciting New Books You Need To Read This Summer” with two starred reviews!Startling and stunning and compulsively strange, Lacey’s sophomore novel is a haunting investigation into the nature of love. With otherworldly precision and subtle wit, Lacey creates a gently surreal dreamscape that’s both intoxicating and profound. A singular novel; as unexpected as it is rich.” — Kirkus Reviews, starred review

GRIEF COTTAGE by Gail Godwin
One of Buzzfeed’s “Thrillers You Will Devour This Summer” with two starred reviews! The haunting tale of a desolate cottage, a tragic accident, and the hair-thin junction between this life and the next, from bestselling National Book Award finalist Godwin. “With intriguingly eccentric supporting characters and a dramatic setting, Godwin’s riveting and wise story of the slow coalescence of trust and love between a stoic artist and a grieving boy, and of nature’s glory and indifference, subtly and insightfully explores different forms of haunting and vulnerability, strength and survival. Word will spread quickly about Godwin’s tender and spellbinding supernatural novel.” — Booklist, starred review readmoreremove

Your Next Book Club Pick Is…

Well, only you know what your library’s book club is reading next, but we will happily share these expert suggestions:

NEABigReadThe NEA Big Read recently expanded their selection to “offer a selection of books that is contemporary, diverse, and relevant to our times.” Their Macmillan picks are:

CITIZEN: An American Lyric by Claudia Rankine
GILEAD by Marilynne Robinson (download the guide)
We’ve also got NEA Big Read author Kao Kalia Yang’s new memoir, THE SONG POET (download the guide)

The recently announced Summer 2016 Indie Next List for Reading Groups features these three Macmillan titles:

ON IMMUNITY by Eula Biss (a Top 10 pick!)
EVERY FIFTEEN MINUTES by Lisa Scottoline (download the guide)
THE BOOK OF SPECULATION by Erika Swyler (download the guide)

Plus our new Librarian of Congress Dr. Carla Hayden recommends SHELTER by Jung Yun (download the guide) & THE SPORT OF KINGS by C.E. Morgan (download the guide) in her Summer Reading List!

Last year we predicted that the movie version of THE REVENANT was going to be huge, and we’re making the same call with SILENCE by Shusaku Endo. This classic novel of enduring faith in dangerous times is soon to be a major motion picture directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Andrew Garfield, Liam Neeson, and Adam Driver. Picador just released a special expanded discussion guide for SILENCE, so we recommend getting ahead of the trend (and maybe even organizing a movie night out!).

Talia’s going to share her picks at tomorrow’s Booklist “Best Bets for Book Clubs” webinar, so here’s what Anne recommends:
