In more amazing mystery news, Ann Cleeves (THE CROW TRAP) is being awarded the Crime Writers’ Association (CWA) Diamond Dagger Award, which is the highest honor in British crime writing!

The award recognizes authors whose careers have been marked by sustained excellence, and have made a significant contribution to the genre. She will be honored during the CWA’s Dagger Awards ceremony in London on October 26.

Cleeves said, “It’s a huge honor to be recognized by my peers, the crime-writers whose books, friendship and support I’ve enjoyed for more than thirty years. I am privileged to have had such a happy career and I will always be grateful for the support of booksellers and forever indebted to the passion and expertise of librarians, without whom I wouldn’t still be writing today.”

Thriller Thursday (4/28/16 Edition)

Make sure these stellar new mysteries are on your shelves today!

MURDER AT THE 42ND STREET LIBRARY by Con Lehane
The first book in an amazing new series that features crime at some of America’s most famous institutions of higher reading! Ray Ambler, the curator of the library’s crime fiction collection, joins forces with NYPD homicide detective Mike Cosgrove in hopes of bringing a murderer to justice. “Lehane awards his previous detective, bartender Brian McNulty, a cameo but focuses on the complicated Ray, who looks like a promising newcomer in the talented-amateur ranks.” — Kirkus Reviews, starred review

HARD LIGHT by Elizabeth Hand
In the third Cass Neary mystery, the offbeat photographer is reunited with her long-lost lover, Quinn O’Boyle, who is wanted by both Interpol and the Russian mob. When Quinn then fails to show at their rendezvous point, Cass is fearful she’ll be the next to disappear, and goes on the run. “This great adventure story starring a troubled but intriguing protagonist will please Cass fans, those who like their kick-ass heroines north of 22, and readers who fancy a walk on the wild side.”
Library Journal, starred review

KILL SWITCH by Jonathan Maberry
In the eighth book in the series, Joe Ledger must stop a terrorist about to unleash electronic pulse bombs on 100 US cities. “A blend of sf, horror, technothriller, and crime novel, this is one of the best adrenaline reads out there. A hot pick for anyone who likes The X-Files (Maberry wrote for this franchise as well) or other apocalyptic fiction by authors such as Ben H. Winters and Colson Whitehead.”

LJ Genre Spotlight: Edge-of-Your-Seat Thrills

LJ mystery genre spotlightAccording to Library Journal‘s recent genre spotlight, mysteries still rule! Make sure you’ve got all the Macmillan titles mentioned for your growing collection:
Escaping the Ordinary

DAISY IN CHAINS by Sharon Bolton
On sale: Sept. 20, 2016
A criminal defense attorney with a reputation for getting the wrongly convicted exonerated is drawn into the machinations of a serial killer who claims innocence. “Bolton plays with reader’s perceptions,” comments [Minotaur editorial director Kelley] Ragland, “constantly shifting the ground under your feet as the story progresses.” And while she isn’t delivering an unreliable narrator, “she’s always got the reader where she wants her.”

Criminal Investigations

Female leads also dominate this spring’s crop of crime and police procedural novels. “Women protagonists are stronger than ever and comprise the majority of our list,” says Minotaur publicity manager Sarah Melnyk, who points out that many of these characters have careers in law enforcement or investigative work.

CITY OF THE LOST by Kelley Armstrong
On sale: May 5, 2016
An interesting switch for urban fantasy writer Armstrong. Her sharp protagonist is Casey Duncan, a detective with a dark past who seeks a fresh start in a remote Canadian town.

STRIPPED BARE by Shannon Baker
On sale: Sept. 6, 2016
A female Walt Longmire in Nebraska’s cattle country, Kate Fox must find out who shot her cheating husband, the county sheriff. “It might be a man’s world overall,” comments Tor/Forge senior editor Kristin Sevick, “but there’s virtually no avenue of sleuthing off-limits to women simply because of their gender. The West doesn’t belong only to the boys.”

REDEMPTION ROAD by John Hart
On sale: May 3, 2016
Back in small-town North Carolina, meet Elizabeth Black, a dedicated, driven, and deeply troubled detective and Hart’s first female protagonist. readmoreremove

THE LAST PAINTING OF SARA DE VOS by Dominic Smith
Two starred reviews for this novel that deftly bridges the historical and the contemporary, tracking a collision course between a rare landscape by a female Dutch painter of the golden age, an inheritor of the work in 1950s Manhattan, and a celebrated art historian who painted a forgery of it in her youth. “Highly evocative of time and place, this stunning novel explores a triumvirate of fate, choice, and consequence and is worthy of comparison to Tracy Chevalier’s GIRL WITH A PEARL EARRING and Donna Tartt’s THE GOLDFINCH.” — Library Journal, starred review
