Happy #BookBday (11/22/16 Edition)

Happy almost-Turkey-Day #BookBday to:

THANK YOU FOR BEING LATE: An Optimist’s Guide to Thriving in the Age of Accelerations by Thomas L. Friedman
One of Publishers Weekly‘s Most Anticipated Books of Fall 2016 with two starred reviews! “Inspired by the pleasure he took in the ‘free’ moments he was granted when people he planned to meet were running late, columnist, reporter, and best-selling author Friedman began thinking about our hectic, smartphone-centric lives and the profound impact of the ‘three giant accelerations’: digital technology, globalization, and climate change. How can we adapt? Friedman offers tonic suggestions for fostering ‘moral innovation’ and a commitment to the common good in this detailed and clarion inquiry…” — Booklist, starred review

VICTORIA by Daisy Goodwin
From the New York Times bestselling author of THE AMERICAN HEIRESS and creator/writer of the new Masterpiece/PBS drama Victoria, a glorious novel of the 18-year-old girl who became a great queen. “Highly recommended for historical-fiction collections. Best-selling Goodwin always draws in fans, but expect extra buzz and lots of promotion as news of the TV series elevates demand for the book.” — Booklist

THE MAYAKOVSKY TAPES by Robert Littell
“From the reminiscences of four worldly women emerges a vivid portrait of the life and times of Russian poet Vladimir Mayakovsky. Littell’s mordent wit is perfectly suited to his melancholy tale, rich in dark imagery and razor-sharp dialogue.”

In THE FORTUNE HUNTER, a beautiful empress, a handsome horseman, and a bluestocking heiress form a passionate love triangle. It was a Maximum Shelf Awareness feature and has received rave reviews:

Maximum Shelf: THE FORTUNE HUNTER

MaxShelf-Fortune Hunter
A beautiful empress, a handsome horseman, and a bluestocking heiress form a passionate love triangle in New York Times bestselling author Daisy Goodwin’s new historical novel, THE FORTUNE HUNTER, which was last week’s Maximum Shelf Awareness feature.

Empress Elizabeth of Austria, known as “Sisi,” is the Princess Diana of nineteenth-century Europe. Famously beautiful, as captured in a portrait with diamond stars in her hair, she is unfulfilled in her marriage to the older Emperor Franz Joseph. Sisi has spent years evading the stifling formality of royal life on her private train or yacht or, whenever she can, on the back of a horse.

Captain Bay Middleton is dashing, young, and the finest horseman in England. He is also impoverished, with no hope of buying the horse needed to win the Grand National—until he meets Charlotte Baird. A clever, plainspoken heiress whose money gives her a choice among suitors, Charlotte falls in love with Bay, the first man to really notice her, for his vulnerability as well as his glamour. When Sisi joins the legendary hunt organized by Earl Spencer in England, Bay is asked to guide her on the treacherous course. Their shared passion for riding leads to an infatuation that threatens the growing bond between Bay and Charlotte, and all of their futures.

“In THE FORTUNE HUNTER, Goodwin vividly evokes the atmosphere of the era while illuminating the universal sentiments of love, desire, purpose and ambition. Swiftly plotted, peopled with interesting, sympathetic characters and laced with humor and clever dialogue, this lively novel is historical fiction at its entertaining best.” — Shelf Awareness

Praise for THE FORTUNE HUNTER:

“Goodwin uses finely drawn characters and intriguing plot lines to create numerous memorable scenes such as when the empress, accompanied by Bay, visits and exchanges polite but pointed barbs with Queen Victoria. Although readers who enjoyed THE AMERICAN HEIRESS will be first in line to savor Goodwin’s new novel, they will be followed quickly by others who appreciate engaging and thoughtful historical fiction.” Library Journal, starred review

THE DEAD WILL TELL by Linda Castillo
In Castillo’s latest electrifying Kate Burkholder mystery, the Amish town of Painter’s Mill is plagued by a series of murders made to look like suicides. “Castillo effectively combines an airtight plot with a revealingly complex look at what can happen when a fissure develops along the fault line separating an insular community from the secular world. Castillo shows again why the phrase 'gritty Amish mystery' is no oxymoron.” — Booklist

Downton Abbey Fever Affecting Both Teens & Adults!

With the second season of Downton Abbey currently airing for us Americans on PBS, I'm sure many of your teen patrons have been looking for a way to extend the experience into their reading lives.

School library Journal offers a list of great books to keep the Downton experience alive between episodes including our tie-in titles, THE WORLD OF DOWNTON ABBEY and BELOW STAIRS. And just for fun, we want to add a deliciously scandalous novel to this fine list: THE AMERICAN HEIRESS

Of THE WORLD OF DOWNTON ABBEY School Library Journal says,

"Filled with lush photos, interesting facts, and insider perspectives, this volume will captivate YAs who long to linger in the stately halls of Downton Abbey."

See a sample spread here on the blog.

Of BELOW STAIRS School Library Journal says,

"Entertaining and poignant anecdotes (an employer with a fetish for viewing house staff in their curlers or the sad fate of a pregnant under-parlor maid fired for being seduced by her mistress's nephew) and vividly drawn characters are woven into a narrative that skillfully re-creates a moment in time."

See School Library Journal's full list of Downton-esque books here.

And a little something fun for the crafty crowd: Downton Abbey Paper Dolls!
