ANNE’S BACK!!!

Dearest Librarians,
Once again, I’m baaaaack!! My maternity leave flew by and while it was bittersweet to leave baby Martin and big brother Daniel this morning, I’m so excited to be back and working with all of you again.

Now you might think I spent the last 3 months in a haze of snuggly cuddles and making fun family memories with trips to the beach, the zoo, and going apple picking (and you’d be right), but I also read a LOT:

EXPOSED by Lisa Scottoline
CLASS MOM by Laurie Gelman
SOURDOUGH by Robin Sloan (a LibraryReads pick!)
DEAR FAHRENHEIT 451: Love and Heartbreak in the Stacks by Annie Spence (another LR pick you loved!)
FRESH COMPLAINT by Jeffrey Eugenides
THE ESSENCE OF MALICE by Ashley Weaver
THE GREAT ALONE by Kristin Hannah
FORCE OF NATURE by Jane Harper
A DANGEROUS CROSSING by Ausma Zehanat Khan
GIRLS BURN BRIGHTER by Shobha Rao
THE HUSH by John Hart
GLIMPSE by Jonathan Maberry
BROKEN ICE by Matt Goldman
JAR OF HEARTS by Jennifer Hillier

And while we didn’t publish them, THE HATE U GIVE by Angie Thomas and YOU WILL KNOW ME by Megan Abbott (currently reading) are so, SO good. Happy reading, friends.

Cheers,
Anne

Dead Woman Walking by Sharon Bolton

“The Reacher-like thrills leading there generate adrenaline-fueled pleasure. Bolton, who also writes as S. J. Bolton, delivers another strong, resourceful female character in Jessica Lane.”–Booklist

“Bolton’s (Little Black Lies) latest stand-alone hits the ground running…VERDICT This will be the book of the fall for Bolton’s fans and anyone who treasures the experience of staying up late reading just to find out what happens next.”–Library Journal

The Essence of Malice by Ashley Weaver

“Sparkling…”–Publishers Weekly

“This is an excellent entrée into a delightful (librarian-penned) series.”–Booklist

Good Me, Bad Me by Ali Land

“A deliberate pace and a skillfully woven plot conspire to create a visceral read that’s at once a gripping psychological thriller and a devastating exploration of the damage wrought by childhood trauma.”—Publishers Weekly, starred review

“Land asks if we are doomed to repeat the sins of our fathers—or, in this case, mothers—in her assured, creepy debut… Readers will be more than happy to go along for the ride and may be surprised how they feel about the conclusion, proving the unmistakable spell that Land has cast. Sly, unsettling, and impossible to put down.”—Kirkus Reviews

The Seagull by Ann Cleeves

“Engrossing…This nuanced, adroitly paced tale should satisfy both series fans and new readers.”–Publishers Weekly

Secrets in Death by J.D. Robb

“It is no secret that Robb’s Eve Dallas series continues to be one of the most popular brands in crime fiction. Add that to this installment’s perfectly executed plot, snappy pacing, and judicious sprinkling of dry humor, and you have a particularly enjoyable treat for loyal fans and curious new readers alike. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: With an initial run of 750,000 copies and copious publicity, Robb’s new Eve Dallas title will be heavily requested.”–Booklist

“Robb continues to impress…”–Publishers Weekly

The Woman Who Couldn’t Scream by Christina Dodd

“With the fourth wildly original addition to her Virtue Falls series, Dodd takes more than a few creative risks and then brilliantly succeeds in this sexy, compulsively readable tale of romantic suspense.”–Booklist

“Intriguing characters (including an especially horrifying villain), twin romances (Kateri and Stag’s prickly sparring as well as Merida and Benedict’s trust-challenged bond), and a complex plot that reveals itself with chilling precision keep the pages turning. VERDICT Tense, taut, and beautifully paced, this latest addition to Dodd’s series is another stunner; it will appeal to romance and suspense fans alike. Dodd (Because I’m Watching) lives in Washington State.”–Library Journal, starred review

Thriller Thursday (10/13/16 Edition)

Terror and thrills lurk behind the pages of these #ThrillerThursday picks:

A MOST NOVEL REVENGE by Ashley Weaver
In librarian Weaver’s third entry in the LibraryReads/Edgar-nominated charming mystery series set in 1930s England, Amory and Milo Ames are drawn into the investigation of a years-old murder by a salacious novelist in the English countryside. “Fascinating and stylish characters fill out a finely tuned traditional mystery.”
Publishers Weekly

THE GRAVEYARD APARTMENT by Mariko Koike
A terrifying tale of a young family who moves into an apartment building next to a graveyard, and the horrors that are unleashed upon them. “The haunting itself is well done and scary. The atmosphere and anticipation build perfectly to create an apartment building one would be quite hesitant to live in. Fans of classic ghost stories, such as THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE, will appreciate the subtle chills.” — Booklist readmoreremove

What’s worse, a dead body lies exactly where the children were thought to be heading.” Library Journal, pre-pub alert

LJ Genre Spotlight: Edge-of-Your-Seat Thrills

LJ mystery genre spotlightAccording to Library Journal‘s recent genre spotlight, mysteries still rule! Make sure you’ve got all the Macmillan titles mentioned for your growing collection:
Escaping the Ordinary

DAISY IN CHAINS by Sharon Bolton
On sale: Sept. 20, 2016
A criminal defense attorney with a reputation for getting the wrongly convicted exonerated is drawn into the machinations of a serial killer who claims innocence. “Bolton plays with reader’s perceptions,” comments [Minotaur editorial director Kelley] Ragland, “constantly shifting the ground under your feet as the story progresses.” And while she isn’t delivering an unreliable narrator, “she’s always got the reader where she wants her.”

Criminal Investigations

Female leads also dominate this spring’s crop of crime and police procedural novels. “Women protagonists are stronger than ever and comprise the majority of our list,” says Minotaur publicity manager Sarah Melnyk, who points out that many of these characters have careers in law enforcement or investigative work.

CITY OF THE LOST by Kelley Armstrong
On sale: May 5, 2016
An interesting switch for urban fantasy writer Armstrong. Her sharp protagonist is Casey Duncan, a detective with a dark past who seeks a fresh start in a remote Canadian town.

STRIPPED BARE by Shannon Baker
On sale: Sept. 6, 2016
A female Walt Longmire in Nebraska’s cattle country, Kate Fox must find out who shot her cheating husband, the county sheriff. “It might be a man’s world overall,” comments Tor/Forge senior editor Kristin Sevick, “but there’s virtually no avenue of sleuthing off-limits to women simply because of their gender. The West doesn’t belong only to the boys.”

REDEMPTION ROAD by John Hart
On sale: May 3, 2016
Back in small-town North Carolina, meet Elizabeth Black, a dedicated, driven, and deeply troubled detective and Hart’s first female protagonist. readmoreremove

Thriller Thursday (3/31/16 Edition)

History & mystery abound in today’s #ThrillerThursday picks:

THE 14TH COLONY by Steve Berry
In bestseller Berry’s 11th Cotton Malone thriller, the former Justice Department agent faces down a former KGB agent who plans to exploit uncertainty surrounding the forthcoming U.S. inauguration wrought by a Constitutional loophole. “Once again, Berry mixes history and suspense in a high-energy, action-packed thriller. Fans will not be disappointed as he delivers another complex story highlighted by Malone’s superhuman ability to survive anything and chase the bad guys to the ends of the earth.” — Library Journal

THE MIDNIGHT ASSASSIN: Panic, Scandal, and the Hunt for America’s First Serial Killer by Skip Hollandsworth
Fans of Erik Larson’s DEVIL IN THE WHITE CITY will relish this gripping and atmospheric account of a horrific series of murders in late 19th-century Texas that are largely obscure today, despite their fantastical elements and similarities to the Jack the Ripper butcheries.” Publishers Weekly, starred review

SENT TO THE DEVIL by Laura Lebow
While rushing to polish the libretto for the Vienna debut of Don Giovanni, Mozart’s collaborator—Lorenzo DaPonte—finds himself dealing with murder, both literary and not, in this sequel to THE FIGARO MURDERS. “The puzzle, characters, and period detail are all top-notch.” — Publishers Weekly, starred review

THE CRACKED SPINE by Paige Shelton
In this cozy, American Delaney Nichols moves to Edinburgh, Scotland to start a job at a rare book and manuscript shop called The Cracked Spine. But before she can settle in, she has to recover a precious artifact and figure out how it’s connected to the tragic death of the book shop owner’s sister. “This spotlessly clean, fun-filled read takes plenty of twists and turns on the way to the satisfying ending.”
