Day’s YA – I HATE EVERYONE BUT YOU

Hey hey YA readers!

Emily here, your friendly neighborhood YA aficionado, with my thoughts on another SPECTACULAR book. I’ve been on a bit of a fairy tale/fantasy kick lately (as you could probably tell from my previous two posts, which I’m going to shamelessly plug here and here), so this brilliant piece of realistic fiction was a nice break from the spells and battles.

I HATE EVERYONE BUT YOU by Gaby Dunn and Allison Raskin
9781250129321

YouTubers Gaby Dunn and Allison Raskin are BFFs, YouTube stars, and now, authors. Their main characters, Ava and Gen, are best friends who are separated for the first time ever as they begin their freshman year in college—Ava is a film student at USC and Gen is studying journalism at Emerson College in Boston. On the surface, Dunn and Raskin’s novel is lighthearted and fast-paced, but it also tackles some heavier subjects. Ava is working on managing her mental health through a combination of therapists, medications, and support from her family and Gen. On the other side of the country, Gen is navigating through her own self-discovery as she comes to the realization that she is queer. Each girl misinterprets the other’s struggles at times and the two must figure out how to understand each other and the changes they’re going through while living on opposite coasts. Told through their emails and texts, I HATE EVERYONE BUT YOU is an intimate exploration into the dynamics of two best friends as they take their first steps into adulthood. readmoreremove
