THE GRACE YEAR and THE GIRL THE SEA GAVE BACK make the Fall 2019 Kids’ Indie Next List!

The Fall 2019 Kids’ Indie Next List was announced and includes THE GRACE YEAR by Kim Liggett (in the Top Ten!) and THE GIRL THE SEA GAVE BACK by Adrienne Young!

THE GRACE YEAR by Kim Liggett
Available October 8, 2019 from Wednesday Books

No one speaks of the grace year. It’s forbidden.
Girls are told they have the power to lure grown men from their beds, drive women mad with jealousy. They believe their very skin emits a powerful aphrodisiac, the potent essence of youth, of a girl on the edge of womanhood. That’s why they’re banished for their sixteenth year, to release their magic into the wild so they can return purified and ready for marriage. But not all of them will make it home alive.

“The bones of Liggett’s tale of female repression are familiar ones, but her immersive storytelling effortlessly weaves horror elements with a harrowing and surprising survival story. Profound moments lie in small details, and readers’ hearts will race and break right along with the brave, capable Tierney’s.”

Day’s YA – THE GIRL THE SEA GAVE BACK

Happy Friday, YA librarians!

Ready for the Norse Viking book of your dreams?

THE GIRL THE SEA GAVE BACK by Adrienne Young
9781250168481
Available September 3, 2019 from Wednesday Books
Ages 12 to 18

Adrienne Young’s debut and 2019 BFYA pick, SKY IN THE DEEP, was among my favorite 2018 reads. I know I’m not allowed to have favorites…but COME ON. It was AMAZING! But now it’s 2019… Enter: Young’s latest epic adventure, THE GIRL THE SEA GAVE BACK.

This standalone companion novel stars Tova, a Truthtongue (she can see the future) who washed up on the shores of the Svell clan as a child, and Halvard (remember the young boy in SKY IN THE DEEP?), who is about to become the opposing clan’s leader.

As the chapters alternate between Tova and Halvard, the conflict between their clans escalates. And although the Svell rely on Tova’s ability to see the future, her visions are not always well-received and she is blamed for their misfortune. As the battle rages, Tova must decide if she is indeed a Svell, or if she will finally find her true home elsewhere.

THE HAZEL WOOD by Melissa Albert
Six starred reviews & a 2019 BFYA nominee!
Welcome to THE HAZEL WOOD, Melissa Albert’s fierce, captivating contemporary fantasy about a seventeen-year-old girl who must venture into the world behind a pitch-dark, cult-classic collection of fairy tales to save her mother.

BETWEEN THE BLADE AND THE HEART by Amanda Hocking
The first book in a brilliant new YA fantasy duology. As a Valkyrie, Malin has always known that Valkyries have one great responsibility: to return immortals to the afterlife by slaying them. But when Malin discovers that her mother spared the life of an immortal who was destined to die, her world is thrown into chaos.

FROM THE EARTH TO THE SHADOWS by Amanda Hocking
The epic conclusion to the thrilling Valkyrie duology. While dealing with dark revelations about her life and her world, Malin finds herself with new allies—and new enemies. But for all her strength and determination, will it be enough to save the world before it’s too late?

SHADOWSONG by S. Jae-Jones
In this conclusion to the gorgeous and lush Wintersong duology, Liesl finds that life in the world above is not as easy as she’d hoped, and she must return to the Underground to unravel the mystery of life, death, and the Goblin King—who he was, who he is, and who he will be.

SKY IN THE DEEP by Adrienne Young
Raised to be a warrior, seventeen-year-old Eelyn fights alongside her Aska clansmen in an ancient, rivalry against the Riki clan. Her life is brutal but simple: fight and survive. Until the day she sees the impossible on the battlefield—her brother, fighting with the enemy—the brother she watched die five years ago. In this stunning debut, a young Viking warrior must challenge everything she’s been taught in order to survive and protect those she loves.
