StephanieCliffordEarlier this week New York Times reporter Stephanie Clifford dropped by the Flatiron Building to tell us about her debut novel, EVERYBODY RISE.

In her day job as a court reporter, Clifford has a word limit for her stories but she wanted to go beyond those limits and write an epic, sweeping story. The inspiration? Memories from her days at an East Coast boarding school. Born and raised in Seattle, she experienced culture shock upon entering an elite world full of people from old money who all seemed to know who to hang out with and all the right clothes to wear.

Set that against the years just before the 2008 financial meltdown and you have EVERYBODY RISE: the story of 26-year-old Evelyn Beegan who is trying to jockey for social power and discovers that class, especially on the Upper East Side, still holds sway. In order to be accepted by this rarefied set, Evelyn must be seen as someone with established old money. Her lies start small, but quickly grow, and as she relentlessly elbows her way up the social ladder, the ground underneath her begins to give way.

To celebrate this exciting new talent, we’re giving away 5 signed galleys of EVERYBODY RISE! To enter the giveaway, simply email Library@MacmillanUSA.com from your professional/library-issued e-mail address (subject: Everybody Rise) by Sunday, March 1. Make sure to include your library’s mailing address to be placed in the random drawing. Check out the fine print after the break.
